In the morning, the sun shone brightly, painting the sky a vivid blue and causing the green grass to glisten in its light.

Sarah sat cross-legged on the stone wall by the pool, her debutante dress spread around her. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail and her hands rested on her legs.

Susannah sat in front of a canvas, painting the teenage girl with a big smile, delighted to have her participate in the debutante ball.

Art fascinated Susannah. Each interpretation of a subject and style was unique in its own way. No piece was identical when hand-painted or drawn. For example, when overserving a bowl of fruit, you could replicate what you see before you as accurately as possible or add your own twist to the image. As an artist, you had the power to bring anything to life if you could envision and execute it.

"Everything okay?" Susannah wondered as she continued to paint.

"Yeah." Sarah replied in a quite whisper.

Bitterness and anger consumed Sarah at the moment. These feelings were not the most positive she had felt throughout her life, but it's how she felt towards Conrad now.

"How are you and Conrad?" Susannah questioned, trying to hide her smile.

"We're good." Sarah lied with a forced smile.

"The truth, Angel." Susannah insisted with a knowing look.

Sarah looked up, her eyes wide. "How'd you know?"

"Last summer, you two weren't very discreet with your sneaking around." Susannah explained with a small chuckle. Sarah's cheeks flushed. "I don't think anyone else noticed, but I saw the way you two looked at each other. And don't think for a second that I didn't notice you two holding hands at dinner or that one night you snuck into his room."

"I'm sorry. It just happened one night. After that night, I wanted us to be together, but he never called or texted me after summer. He never told me why. He never actually told me anything."

"Oh, Angel." Susannah mumbled, seeing the tears in the teenager's eyes and she opened her arms.

Sarah promptly stood up and approached the older woman, burying her face in Susannah's neck as she wrapped her arms around her.

"I just don't know what I did wrong." Sarah mumbled, squeezing the woman as tight as she could. "And now everything is so messed up. I can't get him out of my head. Summer isn't supposed to be like this."

"It's okay to feel like this." Susannah reassured, rubbing her back. "It's normal. I' sorry to say it, but you're gonna go through many heartbreaks until you find the one."

"I thought he was my one." Sarah admitted quietly.

Susannah was stunned. She had always assumed that they would end up together, watching them grow up and seeing how they looked at each other was enough for her to believe that they would.
