In a panic, Scott, Malia, and Skylar raced through Beacon Hills Preserve. The three of them had left Brianna, Lydia, and Mason back at the school, relying purely on instinct to find the missing Beta and Chimera.
Every second felt like a ticking bomb, the woods echoing their frantic movements as they spread out, hoping to stumble upon any clue that could lead them to Liam and Hayden.
Skylar's heart pounded in sync with her hurried footsteps, a sharp burn flaring up from the crescent mark on her shoulder. She gritted her teeth, casting a glance at the sky. The moon wasn't full, but she swore she could feel its pull. Was it her hybrid nature? Or maybe it was the guilt.
This was her fault. She had made Liam promise to protect Hayden and Liam never breaks his promises.
The three had split up as they entered the woods, covering more ground as they searched for scents, footprints, anything that could help. Skylar's nose twitched, still getting used to relying on her physical sense of smell over blood that fuelled her vampiric instincts. She took a deep breath, trying to focus on what was in front of her.
No blood.
She couldn't smell Liam or Hayden's blood. That gave her a sliver of hope.
Suddenly, a roar tore through the woods. Instinctively, she bolted toward it, her legs carrying her faster than she thought possible. She pushed through the trees until she reached the peak that overlooked Beacon Hills. Malia arrived at the same time, the two girls breathing heavily.
Scott was on all fours, looking over the peak, "There's no scent. No tracks. No way to find 'em," he said, his voice raw with panic, eyes wide as if pleading with the earth to provide some clue.
