"When he got a girlfriend and took his relationship with her seriously, I just let them be, but I never left his side. I just watched him," I explained, releasing a soft sigh. "That's how it went with my first love," I concluded, wrapping up the narrative.

I gazed into the distance, releasing a series of sighs. Sharing the story felt like extracting a deeply embedded thorn from my heart. While I didn't disclose all the intricate details, such as Kace, Vina, and his past relationships, I felt a sense of relief as I realized the pain wasn't as intense as before. I managed to share everything without shedding a tear. Although, I still lied to him about various parts para hindi niya mapansin na si Kace ang tinutukoy ko.

The high school version of me must have possessed considerable strength. He endured it all, even when he was clearly suffering. He withstood countless heartaches, choosing not to abandon Kace despite his feelings. He remained a friend, hiding his emotions, and supporting him throughout.

Following Vina, he didn't enter any new relationships, remaining single throughout his college years. At the time, I believed that if I displayed signs of affection and treated him exceptionally well, I would have a chance at a romantic relationship with him.

I invested efforts into spending time together. I invited him to watch movies, just the two of us. I treated him to lavish dinners at 5-star restaurants. We even visited a popular couples' beach destination.

I prepared lunchboxes for him, adorning them with heartwarming decorations like a doting wife sending her husband off.

I offered massages to ease his post-workout strains as he aspired to build a more muscular physique.

I relentlessly wore a smile, even when it didn't come naturally.

I playfully brushed against him whenever an opportunity arose.

I joked about us being a couple.

I presented him with gifts on occasions that didn't call for them.

I enrolled in the same university as him, despite its location in Manila, far from home.

However, he remained deeply engrossed in his feelings for Vina and never entertained the thought of entering another relationship. No matter how hard I tried to convey my feelings, he remained emotionally distant. I exerted tremendous effort out of desperation, but every tactic I employed proved ineffective.

In Kace's eyes, those signs were merely indicative of a close friendship between us. I eventually had to surrender and let go.

Kace remained singularly focused on achieving top grades and securing his place on the dean's list. He committed himself tirelessly to his studies, often to the point of suffering numerous nosebleeds due to overexertion. As his best friend, I was there to offer guidance and ensure he didn't push himself to the point of endangering his health.

Despite not openly revealing the reason behind his intense work ethic, I couldn't help but suspect that it was connected to Vina. My intuition told me that she was the driving force behind his relentless efforts.

When I was able to get in touch with her after a month when she broke up with Kace, nabalitaan ko na magtatrabaho siya sa kumpanya ng Daddy niya sa Manila. When I searched it on the internet, I was shocked to see that it was a very successful company which earned billions annually. Sinabi niya rin sa 'kin na nag-aaral siya ng business administration.

I knew Kace was eavesdropping in our conversation.

How did I know?

Oddly, we took up business administration, too, when we originally planned to take up social studies. Looking back at it, I was too in love with Kace that I followed him to the same program even when I wasn't interested in business courses.
