"What the hell?" Patch asked as he left his house. "Who'd you piss off this time?"

"I have it as good as I got." Diego said as he laid on the steps of the house.

"You didn't answer my question."

"Oh, yes. How's all that paperwork coming along?" Diego asked as he took a sip of the coffee patch handed him.

"It's a real page-turner. I've got two guys in children's mask, rare bullet casings, a random fingerprint from a nineteen thirties cold case, and...I just learned that the tow truck driver from the doughnut shop didn't have any family."

"The boy."

"Not his, apparently. Kids our only possible witness and he's a complete mystery. Okay, what's going on?"

"What?"

"You could have called me for an update. So why are you really here?"

"Nothin', I just, uh...my mom. She died last night."

"Shit. Diego, I'm so sorry. I remember how close you were. Is there anything I can-"

"I just- I don't...I don't know how to..."

"Is that what this is about? Who did this?"

"Let's just say I didn't get a good look at their faces."

"You went after the guys in the masks, didn't you?"

"I didn't go after them. And ones a woman...by the way, so stop being so sexist."

"I specifically told you not to follow them."

"Yeah, you and one other person. But no, they came to my house, looking for my brother. They tried to kill Skylar and my family."

"Why?"

"I don't know. He's been missing since yesterday. I need to find him."

"Diego, you need to let me handle this. You're not equipped-"

"Oh, you always loved tellin' me what I can and can't do. You know, maybe, for once just try things my way."

"I can't." He said grabbing his cup and walking to work. "I'm sorry about your mom, Diego. Really, I am." He said before turning back.

Diego sighed as he stood up. He checked his phone which had been ringing off the hook. "Hello?"

"Finally! I've been calling you forever. Look, me and Allison are gonna go to Vanyas so if I'm not here when you come back that's why. Also leave a note when you leave before I'm up, it always freaked me out when you did that."

"I was in a rush, sorry."

"It's okay, I'm just reminding you."

"Wait- why are you guys going to vanyas?"

"I wanted to get out of the house and do something because I was bored as hell and your sister wanted to check on your other sister since you made her storm out last night with your stupid comments."

"They aren't stupid."

"They are. There's no need to bash your sister for writing a book about her own experiences in a family like this. She felt alone and she needed some way to express that and writing a book was her window. So, if you bash her then bash me because I've written plenty of songs about you."

"Okay, but you didn't directly say my name."

"But if you know it's about you then do I have to. Or do I have to remind you. He told her he wouldn't leave. Then he did. Remember that one?"
