Spencer and Olivia laid between the sheets of their blanket, arms wrapped securely around one another. Same place they had been, years before, alone together, only difference was one of them was in pain and it didn't have to do with their relationship dynamic. Spencer's focus falls into a daze recalling the conversation from his parents the night before.
"Spencer is his son in all the ways that count" Grace affirms, heaving out an loud sigh.
"We were going to tell him, it's just..."
"Nobody will tell him that I'm not his real father"
Not his real father. Biologically speaking. There's an piece of him that breaks in the moment. Carter was his father, but not really. Lies and betrayal eat at him. He wished they had told him, but they chose to lie to him instead, and that hurt worser than the truth right now. Everytime he was called an James. It couldn't have been further from the truth. Pulling him out of his thoughts, Olivia lifted her head from his chest, while he tried to slow the pace of his broken heart.
"Tell me" She pleaded with an hint of hope in her tone.
"Ain't nothing to tell"
"Spencer, don't do this again, stop trying to push me away"
The brown eyed beauty that was her appealed to him. Spencer was fighting the urge not to push her away like he's done many times in the past and it wasn't an easy task. He was being taken out of his comfort zone and he didn't like it as much. When she came, he wanted her gone, because he knew she would fight him, and he would lose to her everytime. Olivia Baker is the only person alive that can pull his walls down. He's been grateful for the times when she did. He stared into her light brown eyes, letting his fingers trickle down her back.
"I'm happy you came, I secretly hoped that you would"
Few seconds roll by and Olivia's phone goes off. She smiled knocking her head.
"Is that what led you here then?"
"First night we stayed together was in your parents' home. You were sleeping so peacefully, like the queen you are, and I just kept thinking to myself, damn, how did I get so lucky?"
"And you were so compelled by that, you came here with liquor by yourself?" He laughed, squeezing her frame tightly to his.
"It wasn't like that, I would've been fine not seeing anyone else unless it was you. And just when I thought I had nobody, you showed up for me when I needed you most"
"If you needed me baby, you could've just went home and waited for me....our home, instead of ghosting me and everyone else"
"I'm sorry baby, I didn't do that to hurt you by any means, I just needed space after that and everyone was in one spot, I just couldn't stay there with them...."
Olivia's eyes softened into his tilting her head to the side.
"Carter needs you Spence, you can't stay here"
"No he doesn't, he's got his real sons with him already, they'll be fine without me"
"Spencer come on, you know that's not tru-"
Olivia sighs frustratedly at his stubbornness as he interrupts her angrily.
"Yes it is! I'm not his son, it's on the fine print, you know it, you seen it"
Her eyes close up slowly, thinking long and hard about her response.
"Baby, I understand. I understand"
Speaking more slowly. She raises up, folding the blanket to cover her naked frame, coiling it around herself.
"Your birthday suit is an better view for me"
He teased, and she shot him an stern look with her brow easily arched sitting next to him.
"I need your undivided attention and I'm not going to get that if your focused on my titties" Just like that, he goes into another trance.
"Earth to Spencer!"
Snapping her fingers in his face loudly.
"My bad, I'm listening now"
He shrugged, pushing his hands behind his head, stretching himself out at the same time. Olivia's face scowled.
"When I was leaving to come find you, I overheard the doctor saying that your daddy wasn't doing well with the operation. Now I know you don't wanna hear this, but you need to, he's really sick and he could die at any moment. The answers your seeking, aren't gonna get answered if you stay here"
"And what if I don't wanna hear what they have to say? What if I don't want answers?"
"But you do. You may be fighting it right now, but facts are, you do want answers to your questions about this" She shifted in her stance.
"Even if that were true, I don't think im ready to hear them yet. I need to pull myself together first" Olivia nods, pressing herself back into his side, resting her head on his shoulder.
"I know this is gonna be hard for you to grasp but, I don't believe for an second, they did this to purposely hurt you. There's gotta be an good reason behind why they kept it an secret from you"
"Who knows their reasoning, to be honest, part of me doesn't even want to know"
"Even you don't believe that. I know they messed up and yes, they hurt you from this, but I know that they love you and would never do anything to hurt you. Deep down, you know that too"
"I was born when she was eighteen" Rolling his fingers through her long curls.
"I always thought that she got pregnant when they were younger and then married shortly after that. Guess I was wrong, I didn't know anything, I'm so confused and have too many questions I can't even answer myself"
"The person who can give you those answers is waiting for you at the hospital"
Olivia softly urges him. Phone goes off again and Olivia goes to grab it. Spencer keeps her in place, holding her by the waist.
"I need to get that" She said, while he disagrees shaking his head.
"No you don't right now. They can reach-"
"Look, I'm no stranger to the dangers of avoidance but you can't go on like this forever, Spence" Without another word, she accepts the call, putting the receiver to her ear.
"Yes, hello?"
She stands, pacing around the shed.
"I found him yes, he's here. He's fine but...."
She draws in an long pause, eyes snapping to him.
"I don't wanna be in the middle of this, I think you should hear it from him"
Another beat of silence thickens the air.
"Well what do you mean, is everything o-"
Spencer's head looks up, witnessing Olivia's eyes watering, clutching her chest.
"Were coming!"
"What happened?"
He probes, already knowing the truth.
"We have to go"
"He's gotten worse....hasn't he?"
Olivia sadly nods. Trepidation settles in for him.
"We need to go, now Spencer"
In that moment, all of the anger he was feeling towards everyone disappeared into thin air. He threw on his clothing, taking his girl by the hand and headed for the hospital, praying to the heavens above, that he would make it in time to say goodbye.
