Sarah walked through the front door, her encounter with Rehan weighing heavily on her mind. Her mother, sensing her distress, asked, "What's wrong, dear?" Sarah sighed, seeking solace, and replied, "I just need some rest, Mom." She retreated to her bedroom, sinking onto her bed with a heavy heart.
As she settled in, her phone buzzed, instantly igniting a spark of excitement within her. Sarah's eyes widened as she saw the name Safiya flashing on the screen. Safiya was her closest friend from university. "Hello Sarah! Have you forgotten about me? No calls, no messages, nothing," Safiya playfully complained.
Sarah, feeling guilty, quickly responded, "Oh Safiya, I'm so sorry! It's just that I've been caught up with my family's absence lately." Safiya chuckled and reassured her, "Don't worry, I was just teasing. I'm sure your family is thrilled to have you back."
With Safiya's understanding, Sarah felt a wave of relief wash over her. She opened up to her best friend, sharing her experiences. The two friends engaged in a heartfelt conversation, their words flowing with empathy and comfort.
After their talk, Sarah's worries about Rehan seemed to fade away, replaced by a renewed sense of peace. Safiya's unwavering support had reminded her of the strength of their friendship, bringing solace to her troubled heart.
Rehan returned home, greeted by his mother's curious question, "Did you meet Sarah?" He decided to share everything about their encounter, leaving out the emotions he felt when he saw her.
On the other side, Sarah's mother confronted her, "Why didn't you tell me that you met Rehan? And if you both met, why didn't you bring him home? He even came to see you." Sarah was taken aback, wondering how her mother knew all this when she hadn't told anyone. She suspected that Rehan might have confided to his own mother.
"Ammi, you know I don't talk to him, so how could I have invited him home?" Sarah exclaimed, trying to make sense of the situation.
"What does it mean Sarah? He is your cousin. He came here just to see you and you didn't care to invite him?"Her mother scolded.
Sarah's heart sank as she grappled with the disappointment that engulfed her. She longed to confide it to her mother, to explain why she hadn't invited Rehan, but the words eluded her. How could she articulate the hurt she felt when he revealed that his presence was solely at his mother's behest? It pierced her deeply, knowing that he hadn't come on his own will, driven by his own desire to reconnect. The pain consumed her, leaving her feeling unseen and unvalued.
Their conversation was filled with confusion and unanswered questions, leaving both Sarah and Rehan pondering the mysterious connection between their mothers and the unspoken emotions that lingered between them.
