"Yeah?" asks Jace. He was staring off in the distance, but now he's staring at me. I stop walking and he does, too. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know." I start walking again, faster. I have a feeling that something is terribly wrong.
"Hey, slow down!" But I don't slow down. I can't. Instead, I start running. For some unknown reason, I have to get home.
"Was it something I said?" Jace asks.
"No!"
"Then, slow down!"
"I can't! I have to get home." We finally get to my house, and the door is wide open. Ambulances are all over the place. I just crouch down. I suddenly don't want to be home anymore.
"What happened?" Jace asks me when he catches up.
"Mom," I say under my breath. I take off running into the house. "Mom! Mom, where are you! Mom!?"
I look in the living room. Nothing. Then, I look in the kitchen.
There are holes in our window. "Mom!" I continue shouting. There are drops of blood on the floor. I run down to the basement. I stop about half way down the steps and cover my mouth to keep from screaming.
My mom is sprawled on the floor unconscious, covered in her own blood. I find out that the blood is coming from her shoulder.
I run back upstairs to get one of the doctors. "Hey! Hey!" I yell through the window at two of them outside. "My mom's in the basement! Please..." They go rushing past me and down the steps. They both come up with my mom in their arms.
I run out the door and look around. It's complete chaos. People rushing everywhere, sirens blaring. I start crying. What happened to make it this way? Jace runs to me.
"No one's in my house. I talked to Susan, you know the sweet old lady across from us, and she said that some guy went into your house. Then, all the sudden, she said that she heard a loud gun shot. She saw the guy outside with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other. She said he was shooting everything in his sight, until she called the cops."
All I can say is, "Wow." How else would I respond to something like that? For all Jace and I know, my mom and his family could be dead. Then, where would we go? I would probably go back to Pennsylvania. But where would Jace go?
"Yeah. Did you find your mom?" he asks.
"Um...yeah." I cover my mouth again as more tears fall out of my eyes. I squeeze my eyes shut, but it doesn't help. Hot tears still come rolling down.
"Oh my God." Jace covers his mouth, too. "I'm so sorry for your loss."
I uncover my mouth, and let the tears fall. I'm not trying to conceal them any longer. I look up at the moon. "She's not dead...I hope. She got shot in the shoulder. I found her in the basement unconscious. My theory is that, she got shot in the kitchen, because there was blood on the kitchen floor. Then, she was dragged down to the basement in hopes of better hiding her body."
One of the doctors that got my mom runs up to me. "We are putting your mom in the ambulance. You have to come with me."
I look at Jace and point to him. "Uh... can he come, too?"
"Is he your brother or close relative?"
"Would it be believable if I said he was my cousin?" I wipe under my eyes to show him I was crying. Maybe he has a soft spot?
He smiles. "Maybe."
"Come on. He has no idea where his family is. I'm not leaving his side."
"Fine. He can come to. Come on."
I look at Jace and follow him.

She's still alive. She was shot in the shoulder, and when she fell, she hit her head really hard and fell into a coma. The doctor said she had very little blood loss. He assured me that she would be awake soon. It's been a day since she said that. I'm at school now. Sitting through the boring class of Algebra 2. They made me go to school because my last day will be tomorrow, and they want me to start taking my stuff home. So tonight, I will go home, then Mrs. Norman will take me to the hospital to see my mom. Then, over to their house because as a, "minor", apparently I'm not allowed to live by my self. Plus, I have to go to school in the morning, so I can't stay the night at the hospital.
The bell rings. Well, off to my next class.
All day I can't stop worrying about my mom.
The final bell rings ending my last class. Finally, home! I walk home, put away some stuff from my locker, go to the Norman's house, and knock on the door.
"Hi!" Mrs. Norman greets me.
"Hey."
"I bet your dying to see your mom." She turns and yells, "Jace! Come on, Rosetta is here!"
Jace comes down the steps, and gives me a smile. "Let's go!"

"Mom!" I practically scream. I drop my things and run over to her.
She's awake.
"Mom!" I yell again. I now stand beside the bed. I hug her. Jace calls the nurse because it looks like she just woke up.
"Wait," she says. She seems confused about something. Then, she says it. The three words I don't ever want to hear. Three words that are said in movies, but I thought I would never have to hear them. Three words that put a hole in my body, and make me stumble backwards.
"Who are you?"
