I wake up to tapping at my window. I sit up and rub my eyes. It's still blurry when I open them. I blink a few times. I check my phone. It's midnight. I stretch a little more and get up to look at my window.
I sigh. Jace is at the window, smiling his head off.
I open it, careful not to make any noise. I give him an exhausted, "What?"
"Why hello to you too," he replies still smiling.
"Sorry, let me correct myself. What are you doing here?"
"Ouch." He puts his hand over his heart and leans back. Only now do I realize that he is on the rope ladder I used to get out of his sisters room.
"What are you doing here?" I repeat. I smile this time, thinking about how ridiculous this all is.
"Come with me." He has a mischievous look in his eye. All the sudden he puts a finger to his lips, and is climbing down the ladder.
I sigh and look frantically around the room for shoes. All I can find are my bunny slippers. What the heck? I put them on and climb down the ladder in my pj's.
I brush off imaginary dirt. "What do you want!?" I stand with my arms crossed.
"Now that were dating officially, I want to go on a date. I couldn't wait for the morning, I'm too excited!" Jace picks up a basket and motions for me to follow him.
I have to admit, I did not expect this at all. This is really sweet of him. I mean, the fact that he 'couldn't wait for morning' is adorable. He's so cute. I can't believe how lucky I am to have him as my boyfriend.
I catch up to him. Walking is slippers isn't as bad as I thought it would be. He shifts his basket to the other hand. He reaches out to me and finds my, probably cold, hand. For a while, we walk in silence, hand in hand. Our hands are swinging back and forth. Slow at first, then fast. Then really fast. We both laugh and go back to swinging slowly. I lean in and kiss him on the cheek.
"I like it when you do that," Jace smiles.
"I like it when I do that, too." I smile back at him.
He pauses."I can't believe this is happening."
"Me either. Being out this late without our parents knowing is crazy," I reply.
"No, I mean us dating. I've thought of this for so long and now it's really happening. It just feels so surreal."
"Yeah, I know what you mean. It's kinda like that day when you took me to the set, and Dan asked me to audition for Bianca right then and there. Then, he told me that I got the part, even though Meave already had the part. I still feel bad for her."
"I feel bad for her, too. I wonder what she's doing right now."
"Sleeping. Like we should be," I say with a little edge in my voice. I would like to be sleeping right now, but this is defiantly better than sleeping.
"True. But, you have to admit, this is way better than sleeping." It's like he read my mind.
We walk in silence for a while. Then I ask, "So, where actually are we going?"
"I don't really know."
"What's with the basket? Are we having a picnic in the dark?" I ask raising an eyebrow even though he might not be able to see it.
"I don't really know," he repeats. " I guess I just wanted you to think I had a plan so, you would come out of your house better. There's nothing in here." He opens it and turns it upside down to prove it.
"That makes sense...I guess," I say.
He laughs. "Thanks. There's a method to my madness."
"A method to your madness..." I pause and act like I'm thinking. "Nope. Not buying it."
"Really?"
"Really."
"Dang it." We both laugh.
Where ever he's taking me, it takes a long time to get there. I look up as we walk in silence once again. I look at the power lines and the tall skyscrapers of San Diego. "Sometimes I wish we lived in the country. Or the suburbs," I think aloud.
"Yeah. It would be pretty different."
"I mean, I love San Diego, but sometimes it's noisy. I just feel like it would be a lot quieter in the country."
"Well maybe one day, when we're married, we could move to the country."
"When we're married?" I'm taken aback a little by this statement. I'm only 15, I don't need to think about marrying anyone. Even though, I do hope I end up marrying Jace.
"Well, I mean...I...um..." He pauses. "I hope we live together when we're married." He looks at me and I can see his teeth shining in the darkness.
I smile back. "Me too." Not that I've planned that far into the future, but if I'm married to someone, I want to be living with them.
We talk some more about our future, and before I know it we're back at the front of my house.
"Is that it?" I ask, a little surprised. I thought it would be more extravagant.
"Yeah...Why?" His confusion is so cute, I can't be mad at him.
"No reason. I just thought we would actually go somewhere." I shrug, trying not to sound too bratty.
"Oh. Well, I was going to take you to the park, but then I remembered that we have a job, so..." He trails off.
I snap out of what ever trance I was in. "Work! Tomorrow! I totally forgot!"
"Yeah. I did too. I just got lost in your beautiful face." He kisses me, and I blush.
"Stop it." I playfully punch his shoulder.
"What?"
"Your too cute," I laugh, and kiss him back. We say good bye, and I climb the rope back up to my window.
I lay back down on my bed and sigh. Tonight was more than perfect.
