Lying in bed, my mind raced, caught up in a mess of possible outcomes. But I couldn't shake thoughts of Graves. It wasn't even horny, not really—not like that. I didn't even like him. But the tension was undeniable. Finally, I gave in. I needed a cigarette, and he was the only one likely to have one.
Slipping out of bed, I walked down the dimly lit hall toward his room. The quiet felt thick. When I reached his door, I took a deep breath, steadying myself before I knocked.
The door swung open before I'd even lowered my hand.
"I knew you'd come," he said with a grin.
"Relax, I'm just here for a cigarette," I replied, glaring at him. "Figured you'd have one."
The smirk fell from his face, turning into an exasperated, are you serious? look.
"Come on in." He gestured for me to enter, then shut the door behind us.
I sat on his bed, waiting for him to hand over a cigarette. He took out a box, pulled one for himself, and tossed the rest to me. I slipped one between my lips, holding my hand out for a lighter.
"Can't trust you with that," he muttered, stepping closer.
He lit his own cigarette, then leaned in, bringing the lighter to mine. The tension was unmistakable. I took a drag, feeling the calm settle in.
"You know these'll kill you, doll," he said, smirking through a puff of smoke.
"Not you giving me a health lecture," I retorted, rolling my eyes.
We sat there in silence for a couple of minutes, just smoking. Then he turned to me.
"Want to see a trick?" he asked, taking another drag.
"Sure, show me."
Without a word, he cupped my face, bringing it close, and as his lips brushed mine, he blew smoke into my mouth, his eyes locked on mine before he leaned back, watching my reaction. Butterflies. Damn it.
I exhaled the smoke in his face and chuckled. "Everyone can do that, Phillip."
"Not as good as me," he said, then pulled me into a rough kiss.
"I've had a rough day. We could both use a release," he murmured, his hands moving over me as he kissed me again, this time with an intensity that made me forget where I was, if only for a moment.
Before I knew it, clothes were stripped away, and I was face down, gripping the bed as he held me tight, driving into me with a fierceness that left my mind blank. His grip was bruising, holding me down, his other hand firmly on my hip, keeping my moans muffled into the pillow. His pace quickened, breathing hard and heavy, each thrust pushing us closer. I could feel him tense as he neared the edge.
Guilt crept in, cold and sharp, cutting through the haze. What was I doing? I was here with someone I was supposed to hate, someone I shouldn't even be speaking to. Graves wasn't supposed to exist anymore.
By the time we finished, the early light of morning filtered through. I gathered the courage to speak up.
"Phillip... I don't think this whole 'teammates with benefits' thing is working out," I said, feeling the words stick in my throat.
"Are you serious?" he asked, eyes narrowing. "Come on, doll. You can't say you didn't enjoy it."
"Phillip, I'm done." I looked away, getting out of bed, pulling my clothes back on.
"Fine. Get out," he replied coldly, his words stinging more than I wanted to admit.
"Is that all I ever was to you? You know what—forget it. Things were better when I thought you were dead," I snapped, slamming the door behind me.
I was finished with him, with the secrecy, the sneaking around. But the anger wouldn't fade, simmering as I walked away. I was furious at him, yes—but even more at myself. I'd betrayed my team, and in that moment, I felt no better than Graves.
