19 - Messages

~*James POV*~

‘Thorn, what did I do this time?’

‘I think that Whisper has more conflicts in the past then she will ever want to let on about. Somehow you must’ve triggered one of her more painful memories.’

I sighed as I sat down on my bed. I was supposed to get my own house in the pack but with everything going on, I let Patricia give the house to a newly started family. I felt bad for upsetting Whisper again. No matter what I do, I seem to hurt her is some way. If only I knew what happened to her then I could fix it.

Thorn listened into my thoughts. ‘Son, you will not win her by fixing her problems. We must appeal to her and be there for her through it. Taking them away only leaves space for bigger problems.’

I sigh as I understand what Thorn says. I just wish I could do something. She won’t let me in though.

And why did she respond like that when I brought up my lack in being able to provide in a fatherly way. It should be a good thing because it’s the best kind of birth control unless she wants to be a mother some day. But does that mean that it’s not the same for her?

I better ask Daniel. He’ll know better than anyone.

I get up and find Daniel in his little office. “Hay Daniel, I have an odd question for you.”

He looked up and his pepper gray hair fell into his eyes. He removed his glasses and pushed the hair away. “Yes?”

I shut the door and sat down. “I was talking to Whisper and tried to explain about me not being able to have kids… She reacted strangely and wouldn’t talk to me. Any ideas on why I am this way and why she acted like that?”

Daniel sighed. “I know a lot about her past but it’s not my place to explain. As for you, natural hybrids cannot have kids. A mule is one example. It is a hybrid of a donkey and horse. Mules are unable to bare or give offspring. You are a natural Hybrid and therefore, unable to have kids. Whisper is a bitten Hybrid… She could have children… But it’s not my place to explain any more than that. Her past is her’s to share and to explain at her own choice and pace.”

I thought for a minute and understood. Whisper could have children… I can’t. But that still leaves why she was upset. Daniel knows but without her permission, he won’t tell me.

I get up to leave. “Thanks that helps a little.”

Daniel nodds and I leave. I head down stairs as Thorn talks to me. ‘Her past must be deep and very painful for her to suffer even now.’

I agree and look around the kitchen for food. ‘And it’s strange how she can have kids but also has that thirst and we don’t and can’t. Strange how there are differences between even us. Mates and the only hybrids.’

Thorn sighs. ‘I’m thankful to not have a thirst because it would disable us at times. It is truly a limiting factor. But is it possible that the stranger wants her because he knows that she could bear children?’

I realize what he’s saying. ‘We have a motive for the bastard but not an identity. If only we knew who it was.’

As I walked back into the living room to head up stair, a growl comes from the corner of the room. I look to see the black wolf staring at me. I growl back before going to my room with my snack. ‘I really don’t like that monster in the house. He has been making me uneasy, James.’

I sigh and sit down on the bed. ‘I know Thorn. But we can’t get rid of him. Daniel says that he belongs to the Rebellion’s funder and to kill the mutt is to destroy the rebellion. If only I could dispose of that mutt.’
