CHAPTER 2
Nia
"Shit" Nia uttered as her thumb punched across her phone screen. She had been trying to get in contact with her husband for the past five minutes now and had been getting nothing but his voicemail. Frustrated, she slammed the phone down on the table in front of her. There were all kinds of ideas swarming her head regarding his whereabouts. She hadn't seen or heard anything from him since earlier that morning when he left the house. Knowing him she could probably bet every dollar in her bank account that he was up to no good.
"He's not coming is he" Nia heard her son Cross say as he entered the dining room. The discomfort in his tone tore her up inside.
"He'll be there baby, I promise" she assured him and stood from her seat. "finish eating and then go get ready. You don't wanna be late" She instructed
Nia headed up the stairs to her bedroom, because she would need privacy for the next call she was about to place. Normally she wouldn't be taking such extreme measures. He had left her no choice. Her son's feelings were involved and that meant all bets were off. Nia played no games when it came to her seed. She had no idea if her plan would actually work. In this case she figured that it would be worth a try. Nia paced the room moving back and forth as she quickly dialed the number. The phone rang a few times before someone answered.
"Seasons Inn. How may I assist your call" A man answered in a rather chipper mood. Nia could tell right away that it had been her homeboy Darius. Darius was one of the Desk Clerks at her favorite Hotel and resort. She and her husband had been going there for years before they ended up moving closer in town. Darius was always so nice to them. He was a very flamboyant brown skin man with a short blonde fade. The two of them hit it off almost instantly once she learned how much he loved to gossip. Darius was always sipping tea and didn't mind sharing any. Nia felt like it would be beneficial to keep him around. Here she was thinking she was going to have to lie to get the information she needed. Darius was sure about to hook her up. She smiled at the thought because her plan just might go smoother than she had expected.
"Hey, whats up Darius it's Nia"
"Hey, girl not a mu'fucking thing" He answered turning off his professionalism to chat with his old friend.
"I'm so glad to hear your voice. You have no idea" Nia declared
"Same here, girl. It's been a minute. how have you been?" Darius asked
Nia sighed loudly "I've had better days but I - " She begained but was cut off by Darius suddently.
" Look, I hate to rush you off but my boss has been on my ass lately about personal calls on the job phone. I'll have to call you back later. We can chop it up then" He said while whispering into the phone. Darius made sure to keep his head on a swivel for his boss, who had a habit of popping up out of nowhere.
"No" she blurted out before he could disconnect the call. "this won't take but a second. listen, I was kinda hoping you could do me a favor"
Darius sighed "Well, that depends on what it is. I hope it's not anything that could possibly get my ass fired because in that case it would be a hell no"
Nia sucked her teeth " It's not gonna get you fired" She reassured "I just need you to look in the system and- "
"Helllll Nah. nu huh" Darius protested while looking around again to make sure the coast was clear. He wasn't trying to risk losing his job. The second he spotted his boss coming around the corner Nia was going to meet the dial tone.
