The air in Alexis bedroom was thick, heavy with a sharp scent of sweat and the sudden crushing weight of reality. For the last hour all the built up tension, grief, and unsaid feelings between her and Donnie had exploded into a desperate, messy physical reunion. As the rhythm slowed and the brief high vanished they were left with an uneasy, chilling coldness. Donnie lay between Alexis legs with her arms wrapped around her waist and head resting on her belly. Alexis softly ran her fingers through Donnie's hair. Her heart fluttered with a fragile, dangerous hope.

" Donnie, what does this mean for us?" Alexis whispered, searching for her face. Donnie didn't move. She didn't respond at first. She just continued laying there in peace enjoying the quiet with her eyes closed.

" Hey," Alexis said softly.

" It means I'm glad I got to hold you one last time, Lex," Donnie said, her voice flat and gravelly. Alexis frowned, the worth in her chest instantly curdling. She lifted from her position, resting on her elbows, Locking eyes with Donnie

" One last time? We just... You came here. I thought-"

" Chill. I didn't mean it like that" Donnie replied, disarming her. Alexis eased her head back down on the pillow.

" How did you mean it then?"

" I mean, like... I may have to go away for a while"

" For work?" Alexis asked as she continued massaging Donnie's scalp.

" Maybe. I just needed to feel something real before I go. I needed to know you didn't hate me."

" I could never hate you, Donnie." Alexis said seriously. Donnie paused, choosing her next words carefully.

" Hypothetically speaking, If I had to go away for a while would you look after Lovely for me?"

Alexis nodded " Of course. You don't even have to ask. You know that's my girl" Alexis said. Donnie went silent again. It seemed like a full ten minutes went by before she decided to speak again.

" You know I love you. Right? Like, even through all the dumb shit recently. I always have, Lex. I never meant to hurt you or treat you the way that I did. I snatched you off that stage that night because something in me couldn't see you up there like that. I'm sorry." Donnie said solemnly.

" I love you too. You know that but why are you saying all of this to me now?"

" I needed you to know my feelings for you never changed regardless of who I was dealing with. I want you to remember us the way that we were and not for all the other bullshit that doesn't mean anything now" Donnie said, causing Alexis hand to freeze in place. She quickly sat up on her elbows again. Donnie lifted her head to look her in the eyes. Alexis noticed how different she appeared. Her eyes looked hollow, drained of the usual cocky shine.

" What's going on? You're talking in riddles, Donnie and it's starting to scare me"

Donnie cupped Alexis's chin, bringing her close as she kissed her with more passion than she had ever kissed anyone in her entire life.

" My bad. I didn't mean to scare you" She said once the lip lock was over before returning back to her position between Alexis legs. Gently she grabbed her hand and placed it back on top of her head, signaling for Alexis to continue with the scalp massage.

" Keep going. That shit was feeling good." she instructed. Alexis smiled as her hands went to work. Donnie's arms squeezed tighter around her waist as she continued rubbing her head. That went on for another ten minutes or so before Alexis ended up dozing off.
