It was soul crushing, heart splitting and bone shattering the way people just didn't care.
"Honestly, I wish I cared more."
Lies.
She did care. It did hurt when others shot her down. It was like a knife to the gut. She would know from personal experience.
She almost preferred the knife.
The way others words slithered in through her ear, but refused to exit through the other, instead embedding itself in her brain, playing on repeat.
"Freak"
"You're such a know-it-all, you brat!"
"She totally lied, no one saves a school, gets stabbed and still lives."
"LIAR"
No, she didn't wish she cared more, she wished she cared less.
The pounding of her heart when she turns away, face red from the embarrassment of just being called a rude name in public. The burning uneasiness in her stomach as she mulled over the words.
They don't all hate me, do they?
Do they tell my friends about me being a liar?
Do my FRIENDS think I'm a liar?
The way she would mull over those words, almost relentlessly, desperate for some reassurance.
From who? Herself? She couldn't reward herself by thinking good about herself. Who cares what she thinks of herself? It's the other peoples opinions that matter, right?
Right.
They were the people that could spread rumors, tell her friends, turn the people that care into those that don't.
"Bitch."
"No one asked!"
It was like a headache. Thinking about it made it worse, but it was impossible to not think about it when it's there.
"Do people ever say stuff, Xavier?" She asked the taller boy quietly. She rolled over to look at him. She was in his shed almost on a daily now, watching him paint as she wrote. Sometimes she would just sit and admire his previous paintings.
"What do you mean by that?" He said, putting down the paint brush, which was still dripping with murky paint water, and turning to look at her.
"Do the other kids ever...say stuff about you?" She said, rephrasing her previous question. "Like rude stuff, but lies."
"Like a rumor?" Xavier asked, raising an eyebrow and wiping his paint covered hands on a dirty paint rag.
"I guess. But they don't spread it. They just say it. To your face." She said, watching the paint transfer from his hands to the rag.
"So like, bullying?"
She shook her head slowly. "No...it's never the same person twice."
"Wednesday, why? Are people being rude to you?"
"No, I'm asking for a school project." She replied, sarcasm laced into her voice carefully, like venom. He was glad to see her usual 'spunk' return for a second.
"What do they...what do they say about you?"
Wednesday sighed, avoiding eye contact with Xavier, turning the seam of her shirt over in her hands. "They...they say I'm a liar, a bitch, a brat, they tell me I take the spotlight away from Enid, who actually saved the school and attacked the hyde." She mumbled the end. There was a thin sheen of tears on her dark eyes.
"Jeez."
That was probably the least helpful thing he could have said. So he tried again. "I'm...I'm so sorry Wednesday, that's terrible."
"Thank you?" She wasn't sure how to respond to that.
"Do they say that stuff a lot?"
"Almost every day."
"Well, I can assure you that you are no liar, no bitch, no brat, and you worked hard to protect this school, and no one, absolutely no one, has the right to claim otherwise."
"But...but they all have good reasoning! I'm not a good person!" Wednesday's nose was a gentle pink due to the crying she was about to take part in.
"You are a wonderful person, Nes. Don't listen to them. If you were a bad person, no one would be by your side right now. You wouldn't have me, or Enid, or Eugene, or Thing. We are here because we care for you, and want to make sure you live your absolute best life."
She smiled gently, her dimple softly making it's way to her cheek. She sniffled softly and wiped her eyes, ruining her mascara and staining her cheeks a gentle grey. "T-Thank you."
He softly stroked her back, rubbing circles on her soft skin through her heavy jacket. "Don't listen to them, it's not worth your time."
"Okay."
"Promise you'll come to me next time something upsets you like this?"
"Yes." She mumbled softly before wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him into a gentle hug. She buried her face into his shoulder.
..................
Maybe the voices in her head stopped, but the people didn't.
She burst open the door to Xavier's shed, falling to the floor immediately and curling up. She looked up at Xavier, tears swimming in her eyes and overflowing down her face.
"Oh baby..."
She normally would have snapped at the nickname. But right now, that term of affection felt...nice.
"It's not fair! I can tell myself it doesn't matter! It doesn't matter what they say! But they keep coming back! With worse words! The stronger words! And they break in and they hurt Xavier! They hurt! And they don't care! They don't stop! And it hurts like fucking hell."
Her bottom lip was quivering, her eyes watering and red, cheeks flushed and damp.
"Oh baby...I know..." He softly picked her up, rocking her softly side to side, wanting to comfort her more then ever.
"And they won't even think about it! They don't realize how much it hurts!" She was shaking, clinging onto him like her was the last thing keeping her from floating away.
"I know it hurts, honey. But please don't ever forget how much you are worth. They aren't even worth your pinkie toe. So why do their opinions matter? Remember the most important opinions are of those who care for you, because those will always be true and honest. Never let yourself go, baby. Always remember your worth."
She sniffled and he held her, praying that she would understand.
Understand that despite the sadness the world may produce, everyone has someone who loves them.
And she had him.
And no matter what, he would always be there. Even when others weren't.
And that's what mattered, right?
People that actually care.
