Y/n's POV
It has been a long, long week of school. Every day felt like a blur. You found yourself zoning out often, drifting to sleep in the middle of class, and feeling too unmotivated to do work. Your eating habits haven't been all that nutritious recently. This is becoming quite unhealthy.
Your parents have noticed that you've been acting different from usual, and they have tried talking to you about it, but you wave them away each time. You have been quite miserable these days. And you already know the reason.
Player.
Player was your best friend and neighbor. When you moved to Canada, he was your first friend, and you two have been... well, inseparable would be an overstatement. You could say that, you two have been 'homies' ever since. You two trusted each other and spoke to each other everyday. You gossiped together, spent time together, and texted each other all the time. You would tell him about crazy stories that happened in school, and he would tell you...
Wait. Player doesn't really... tell you much about his personal experiences & life. All you really know is that he's a total shut-in who lives off of The Living Tombstone & ramen noodles. He attends online school, and his fashion is out of date. You know some basic things about him, but you never really knew him.
It's strange to think about. You've known each other for a couple months now. And just now, after he basically unfriended you, you're finally realizing he's always been really secretive. You didn't know the real him.
All those past memories you've had with Player seem really distant now. The mall hangout, the lunch date, the zoo trip, the Universal Studios vacation...
It feels like all those moments have been fake the whole time.
You were hanging out with the presentation of Player, but you were never speaking to the real Player.
Everything feels fake. Your small crush on him, your shared laughs with him, your matching necklace with him...
Your heart nearly stopped.
Player told you that he lost his golden necklace you gave him at the mall. The small fake chain with a heart charm at the bottom. You obtained two necklaces and shared one with Player because you got a duplicate.
He told you that on the same day you went on a lunch date with him. The same day you first met Carmen. The same day he informed you about criminals lurking around in the area.
Wait a minute... those "criminals" were actually VILE & Carmen turned out to not be Player's aunt, but a master thief named Carmen Sandiego. And then VILE ended up kidnapping Player, and you already know what happened after. But now that you think about it...
What if it was all staged? Player never meant for you to find out about Carmen Sandiego & VILE. But what if he knew you would find out eventually & threw away the necklace in advance? What if he was planning for the downfall of your friendship all along?
After all, he was a super-spy-hacker-hero-mastermind. He's apart of a discreet group trying to take down another discreet group. He knows more than you do. He's over ten times smarter than you. You can't trust him. At least, not anymore.
Perhaps your friendship was destined to fail before it even started.
And now, all you feel is guilt.
Falling into the trap of complicated dangerous missions & advanced secret organizations. You were so oblivious. So naive at the fact that your best friend has been hiding all of this from you.
After thinking about it for a little longer, your mother came into the room. You were so deep into your thoughts that the sound of her voice jumpscared you.
