It was around three in the morning when Y/N put an end to her pickpocketing. She sat alone at the dead end of a dark alley and waited for Dabi to return. To kill time, she looked through the old musty bag filled with wallets and loose change. Honestly, she was surprised at how much she got even if it was a dumb plan.
All she had to was bump into a guy, flirt, and lift whatever cash he had on him while he was distracted. Most didn't notice and the ones that did and pursued got lost once she activated her invisibility. She honestly found it amusing that their minds went out the window. But thanks to them they were getting closer to a hotel room.
Y/N closed her eyes and leaned against the wall while she daydreamed about a cozy bed soon. It only took a few minutes for a commotion outside the alley to interrupt her daydream. She stashed her bag of loot behind the dumpster and left. Her instincts were urging her to investigate the noise.
When she reached the sidewalk, she finally found Dabi and why he was taking so long to get to the rendezvous point. Dabi was running towards her with two policemen right behind him.
Y/N's eyebrow furrowed. Surely Dabi could handle police officers by himself. It honestly surprised her to see him run from something that wasn't bullets.
Y/N tried to make light of the situation. She gave Dabi a quick wink and he rolled his eyes and kept running. Once the blur of navy blue sped past her. She stepped onto the sidewalk. She extended her arm in front of her and the two police officers ran straight into her arm. The officers fell at the same time unconscious. Besides the small amount of blood trickling from their noses, they were fine.
Dabi had stopped. His chest was heaving for air as he wiped his forehead from sweat. Y/N turned to him with a coy smile.
"You new to this?" She teased.
"Not the time," Dabi growled.
Before she replied she felt something tighten around her arm and pull her down. Y/N yelped in pain as something grabbed at her arm. She could barely see the sliver of the blood-red ribbon wrapped around her arm.
Y/N yanked on it and the fabric bloomed right in front of her. As bizarre as it seemed the red fabric bloomed into the upper body of a man. He was clad in a dark blue jinbaori with a red shirt underneath. A large bang of silver hair covered the right side of his face. His slate grey eye bored into her. She froze in terror as she stared at Edgeshot, the Number 5 Pro hero.
Y/N threw a futile punch at the hero which he dodged effortlessly with his quirk. He flattened himself and bent himself out of the way of her punch. A thinner red ribbon shot from Edgeshot's body heading straight for her neck. Her arm recoiled, grabbed, and pulled the red tendril away from its target.
Another red tendril splintered from Edgeshot this time aiming at her stomach. A flash of blue caught her eye as she turned to find Dabi right next to her activating his quirk. A blue fire covered her captured arm. Edgeshot took his evasive measures and escaped using his quirk while Y/N gritted her teeth as Dabi's fire seared her flesh. Y/N pulled her arm away from the hot flame and bolted down the sidewalk with Dabi right behind her.
Her burns disappeared when regeneration kicked in. She barely noticed as she and Dabi pushed through the crowd to get away from Edgeshot and the police officers.
Y/N looked back to find Dabi falling behind. She slowed down so she wouldn't lose him in the crowd. Then she realized why it was hard for Dabi to catch up.
She wasn't pushing through the crowd, the crowd was passing through her. She halted looking frantically for Dabi in the mass of people. Turquoise eyes met hers, Dabi immediately made his way toward Y/N and followed her down the alley to its dead end.
Y/N stopped in front of the brick wall. She pushed her hand through to test her quirk. She felt no resistance and was met with the bizarre sight as her hand disappeared through the solid material.
She used her other hand to grab Dabi's but to her horror, her hand permeated through his. The breath in her lungs seized, the tightness in her chest foreboding helplessness. She looked around desperately, deciding how she would fight and defend Dabi. Though she could think of none. How was she going to fight when can't even touch her enemy? All she could do was curse her quirk for coming up with such a selfish adaptation.
Dabi could see the panic in her eyes. He knew he had to fight his way out and he had no hesitation to do. And if that meant Y/N could escape he was fine with that. Dabi brought his lips to hers. Though his lips felt nothing, his heart filled with the bittersweetness of a goodbye. Y/N closed her eyes. She was met with the same absent lips yet her heart burned with the bright memories they had with each other. The gesture in his selfless resolve was all she needed.
A calmness swept over her. Seconds later she felt his lips on hers. Quickly she grabbed his hand and pulled roughly towards herself as she backed into the wall. She felt nothing as she permeated through the wall along with Dabi. Both stood silently on the other side of the wall realizing what just happened.
"Wow...That- that worked." Y/N said.
Dabi was just as shocked as she was. Though was hard for both of them to see in the darkness of the rundown room, she could see the flash of a smile that broke through his nervous look.
"Yeah, it did." He finally said.
The sound of the police and the flicker of a flashlight through the barred window behind them reminded them of their situation.
"C'mon let's go." She ran towards the next wall with Dabi's hand still in hers.
They passed through walls of buildings, stores, and restaurants. Far enough to get away from the police and Edgeshot. She finally stopped in a vacant office building.
"I think we're good now." Y/N let go of his hand.
She looked around the room filled with empty cubicles. Y/N sat on a small desk. She's always been grateful for a successful escape, especially from a pro hero like Edgeshot. But she left the money. She could imagine the bag had already been picked up by another small criminal or the police. Y/N sighed, the fog of her warm breath in the air.
"Well, we're safe here. Let's get some rest." Y/N suggested.
You glance at Dabi. The disappointment weighed down his shoulders as he looked out the window. Y/N knew he was thinking about the fact they had to start over with the money. The truth also pained her, but talking about it would make them both suffer.
Dabi eventually returned to her side and laid down on the desk with her. Regardless, of how close Dabi she still felt cold. Involuntary shivers traveled down her body. Dabi sighed, there was no way he could sleep with her moving. Dabi took off his jacket and threw it over her.
"Thanks. But what about you?" Y/N asked.
His body did well in cold temperatures. It wasn't a personal preference, though he wished it was just that. The painful memory slowly pushed through his mind. Dabi couldn't remember the sterile smell every hospital had or the way the white lights brought unease to his younger self. All he could remember were the words of his parents and the doctor speaking privately about his quirk.
An unusual case...
He takes after his mother...
He's not built to endure fire, but rather, withstand freezing temperatures.
He was young, bright, happy. But that light had died within him. All of his hope was crushed behind that door. But he hadn't gone dark yet. At the same time, a spark created a flame that could never be put out.
"I'm fine," Dabi responded. "I prefer the cold anyway."
