Chapter six:
[]Kolonia[]
The rough, dusty tile clicked gently under my light footsteps, as I hurried to get Cora to the campus nurse.
I arrived quickly, avoiding the most populated routes to the healer's room, and told the doctor what happened
"She got kicked during training and passed out" I pointed to her forehead. The nurse replied with a bored nod and said, "OK, bring her over to this cot and she can rest here for the day until she wakes up. You are free to stay if you would like, just make sure you're quiet." The nurse drummed her fingers on the counter with blatant boredom, and these occurrences were nothing new.
The scent of the sterile room filled my lungs as I sat on the small chair next to Cora.
Cora started turning restlessly in her sleep. She mumbled quietly, and I leaned in to listen. It was a mix of "No! Don't leave!" and "Momma! No. I don't ...be alone!" She whimpered. I hugged Cora close, trying to comfort her in her fitful sleep. "It's okay, Cora. You're not alone. Shh." I whispered into her ear. Cora calmed a bit, her breathing slowing and body relaxing. Within minutes, a relaxed expression graced her features once again. While I sat by her cot, I let my mind drift away to various memories of Cora and I. I was glad I had met Cora, I recalled once when we were laughing really hard, and she was drinking soda and it came out her nose. It was hilarious, but I was the only one laughing so loud. While we were both caught in a fit of laughter, I grimaced as I remember snorting obnoxiously loudly. That day Cora and I both made fools of ourselves.
After a little while of peaceful sleep, Cora woke up.
"Cora!" I exclaimed, a bit too loudly for the cramped space.
"Jeez, Lyla, please be quiet, my head hurts so bad- Wait, why does my head hurt?!" Cora looked around.
"You were complaining about a stranger who hit you with the handle of his sword and then you passed out," I said, still concerned.
The nurse walked in. "Girls, your last class is almost over, so just take this pass and go back to your rooms." She paused, then stared pointedly at Cora "And you, be careful-you've got a minor concussion."
Cora gently bobbed her head up and down but stopped and winced as pain wracked her body.
"Come on Cora, I'll walk you back to your room," I said, already standing up. "How was your rest?" I asked Cora.
"Rest? More like I fainted and didn't wake up for a while." she dramatically put a hand against her forehead and pretended to faint again, catching herself before she hit the ground. Gritting her teeth, she ground out; "Should not have done that." Cora swayed on her feet, fighting waves of nausea.
