Chapter Forty-Four

[]KOLONIA[]

After a hearty, almost heavy, breakfast with Solaris, the two of us planned an entire day of Immanis riding and sightseeing in the city. It wasn't often I left the Gladius campus, that is, not counting my regular visits to the Wynstonian.

"Hold on," I told Solaris as the two of us walked to the stables. "I'm going to send a message to Cor- one of my friends." I corrected my slip-up, as I knew that Solaris had no clue who Cora was. She had classes on my side of the school.

-hey Cors, I'm going on a ride with one of my friends. dont wait for me <3-

I swiped the projected screen away and nodded to Solaris, a tight smile on my face. "Okay," I continued, "I'm ready." After a long night that brought back too many memories, I just wanted to get the hell out of here. I popped my knuckles and rolled my neck, stretching for a day in the saddle. The sky was red-tinted from the suns that hung low in the sky, casting a wide net of ruddy orange over the rough, sandy landscape. We both saddle up our Immanises, swinging up and nudging our animals forward. Talking animatedly, we headed into town.

We both fell silent at the sight of the bustling city. Heat waves washed over us as we dismounted and began leading each of our Immanises. "So..." I began.

"Where first, wanna go get some sort of dessert? It's past lunch and I could really use some sweets right about now." I murmured the last part.

"We... could....go..get...." Solaris said, trying to think of a dessert we might both like.

"TIRAMISU" I interrupted. I chuckled, grinning at my uncalled for outburst. Tiramisu was by far my favourite dessert in town, despite being from centuries ago and from a different planet. Just thinking about it made my mouth water. The taste of a wonderfully perfect blend of coffee and chocolate already swimming on my tongue.

"Oh, that hungry, are you?" She snorted, grinning ear to ear and giving me a playful shove.

I nodded, giving Zenira a pat. "Let's find a place to board them." I gestured to our Immanises, "I think I remember a place over here." I said, my stomach grumbled in response.

"Got it, I'll follow you there." Solaris smiled, but cast a worried glance around, making an effort to conceal it. But I saw her gaze. I pretend not to, though. Gotta keep the peace I just achieved. "Come on, girl." I mumbled, rubbing my Immanis and striding forward.

Solaris's head snapped back to me. "What was that?" She asked, inclining her head.

"I was just telling-"

An arrow cut me off, whizzing past me and landing squarely in a building mere inches in front of me. Judging by the angle, it was shot from a vantage. I whirled, swinging onto Zenira with the grace of the wind. "Let's go." I boomed, gesturing to Solaris a split second before taking off, a volley of arrows landed hot on our heels. I nudged Zenira into an unbearably fast loping gait, urging her on and then tapping a rein while kicking on the left to get her to make a sharp turn. Her long, agile legs carried us, Solaris's mount struggling to keep up. "Atta girl," I panted, the wind almost stealing my words. My face burned and adrenaline rushed through my veins. Blood hammered in my ears as we turned again, heading back into the desert. A purple-tipped arrow flew, landing with a swish in the sand next to me and Zenira. Whoever, or whatever, it was, they were still in pursuit.

"SOLARIS?" I shrieked, not daring a look behind me.

"Here!" She shouted back from behind me, no doubt clutching to her Immanis for her life. I slowed Zenira enough for Solaris to catch up. We both panted, hair wild, eyes darting. "We should probably tell Hansle-" I paused, thinking, remembering.

"Can't tell her." Solaris sighed.

"Yeah, let's figure this out when we get back." I scowled. "I'm still hungry."

"Mhm." She gave her Immanis a nudge, speeding it up to keep up with Zenira's lengthy strides.

I cast a nervous glance backwards, searching for the arrow-shooter.

"See anyone?" I asked, looking forward.

Solaris threw a glance over her shoulder, searching the horizon. "No..." She keeps her head back for a few more seconds.

I sat deeper in my saddle, giving a gentle tug at the reins to slow Zenira.

"...So. Who can we tell?" I asked Solaris, "Now that Hansley..."

"I've been thinking." Solaris said, and looked back over her shoulder once more. "We could tell Winxlei."

I clutch my still-sore nose, all my bruises suddenly becoming more noticeable. "Do we have to?" I groan.

"Yeah, she's trustworthy, I promise." Solaris smiled.
