Chapter 29

[]CANIS ALATUS[]

'Zephyr!' I leaned downwards to grab them, trying as gently as I could to pick them up.

Unfortunately, it didn't work, and Zephyr slipped out of my mouth, and back into the snow.

I layed down, not quite knowing what I was doing. Since the cold didn't get through my fur, I curled around Zephyr, wriggling around them until I was in sort of a wind-block around them.

After what seemed like forever, Zephyr began to stir. I kept cuddling around them still, as I feared them passing out again. Zephyr pushed off my body, but they couldn't stand up. I stood, still not understanding why Zephyr was still weak. I put my head down low by them, as a little support to help them stand.

I started walking, hoping Zephyr would follow me, as I didn't think they'd be able to hear me if I tried communicating. Zephyr stumbled along next to me, a hand still resting on my side.

Thud.

A dull thunk in the snow made me look over, Zephyr lying there, very pale.

Their freckles were striking, dark grey eyes like a storm.

Their grey eyes were closing, eyelids fluttering.

From what I could smell, I mean tell, this wasn't normal for Zephyr.

Their sub-clan is meant to withstand the cold, always getting the large dogs that could travel very far while carrying heavy weight in the freezing temperatures.

A click sound in my brain.

I'll carry Zephyr back. At least until I get too tired, or we stumble upon a search party.

I layed down, rolling my head under Zephyr and trying to get them on my back. They must have understood because, in a last burst of energy, they swung onto my back.

It felt natural. Even though we were supposed to go through months of training, and I was still too young to bear a rider, it was amazing.

I had never felt so free, starting with a slow ramble to get Zephyr used to my movements.

They tried to grip my fur, but their fingers slid uselessly.

I did my best of a smooth gallop, trying not to bounce them off in such a weak state.

It had been what seemed like a few hours, and even I started to feel the wind.

I sat down to take a break, forgetting Zephyr was on my back. They slid off with a soft swish and fell into the snow, back twisting and limbs bent at odd angles. Damn it. I pouted, plopping down next to them, wrapping my fluffy tail back around them.

Don't do it Chocolate. Don't fall asleep.

My eyes blinked involuntarily, my rapid breathing got deeper and slower.
