Chapter Eleven:

[]CANIS ALATUS[]

I let loose a sharp puff of cold air after the Principal's message finished, debriefing all the students on everything I already knew. I tightened my grip on the school-standard black leash I was holding. My ears twitched, and my wings trembled nervously, both having particularly wild minds of their own. Slowly but steadily, I breathed deeply a few times, telling myself repeatedly I was ready for this. I was born for this.

An automated countdown began. 5...4...3...2...1

Hissing filled my ears, the recognisable sound of pressurised air from the kennels was the only sound for an all-to-brief second, opening up from right to left. Large fluffy dogs, smaller thin-coated dogs, and many others of all shapes and sizes came sprinting out, nearly bowling over each other. I looked for my friends and spotted Pyri, who was being approached by a very large Akita, who was wagging its tail cautiously. Pyri holds out her hand, and the dog closes the gap.

The sound of a clicking leash makes my ears flinch.

I squinted into the distance, looking for Ira. After a little while of looking, I finally found her, and she was staring mesmerizingly at a beautiful Husky, who seemed to be moving in a motivated direction, nose in the air.

An older-looking German Shepherd started walking towards Ira, looking like it didn't want to make eye contact with her. Slowly, she put her hand out, flinching as it touched her hand gently with its nose, the Shepherd having to reach down quite a bit.

My gaze wandered back to the majestic Siberian Husky, who was now walking in... My direction?

A small shout of excitement came from what sounded like Zephyr, and I looked around for them too. I found them, they were near Ira, but further down to the left. A huge Newfoundland was excitedly loping towards them, yet Zephyr didn't put their hand out. The large dog scooped their hand into its dripping mouth with far too much care and gentleness that contrasted to its hulking size. Another click rang through the tension-filled air, which seemed to be buzzing with the amount of anticipation and nerves. Again, a flash of a white and grey coat from what I assumed was the Siberian Husky. This time, the Husky came toward me more head-on. Now that it was in better view, I realised it's one of the tallest Husky Spirit Dogs I've ever seen. It stretches out its neck, reaching for my hand. I hesitantly hold my hand, for a split second worrying it would bolt. Then, the world went quiet. Everything around us stopped. For a second, it was only us. The most magical moment ever was happening right now, the bond that tethers one to a Spirit Dog until parted by death. There was no going back. A blinding moment of pain, just for a little while, and then a click. This time the click came from me. Us. Smiling, I raised my hand upward, gingerly, to pet her neck. 'Hunter' an unfamiliar and all too icy cold voice said, in my head, calmly. "Hey, Hunter, I'm-"

The chilling voice cut me off 'Kori, I know.'

"Oh, well great, we can skip the rest of the introductions now I guess," I said, shrugging. I let the leash attached to her harness slack a bit, knowing she'd follow me. We walked to the main kennels, and we caught up to Zephyr, dragging their giant, cuddly Newfoundland to the kennels. "You good Zephyr?" I ask, chuckling to myself.

'Tell your small friend that they need to reach out through their bond, that should help, I know Chocolate can be a bit, how to describe this kindly... In short, I'm a bit of a bad listener.'

"Zephyr, Hunter saids to try reaching out through your bond... to Chocolate?" I said slowly, my voice booming across the distance.

"Ok, I hope that works," Zephyr said, shutting their storm grey eyes and putting on a concentrating look. As if a key turned on the huge dog, it leapt into action, dragging Zephyr to the kennel building. "Bye Zephyr!" I called to Zephyr's back and waved.
