Chapter 23
[] CANIS ALATUS []
I idly fidgeted with my suit.
"Pyri, just tell Stella to help me get Hunter up. No need for so much... whatever this is." I gestured in between all of us.
"Okay, but Kori, how is this going to work?" Pyri asked with confusion in her eyes.
Ignoring Pyri's unknowingly blatant confused look, as I didn't know what to do either, I kicked my foot slightly along the floor.
"I don't-" But something had cut me off.
A sharp, booming bark, muffled shouting trailing behind it.
I strode the few steps to the door and peeked my head out, getting hit with a blast of wind as a huge, dark brown dog ran past, toenails clicking on the hard floor. An oddly familiar voice said something to get the dog to stop, in vain, as the dog just kept moving.
'Zephyr!' I thought to myself. I slid my gloved finger along the smooth surface of my wristband.
As soon as my helmet's microphone had connected with Zephyr's, I heard the obnoxiously loud sound of panting. I knew that Zephyr was a pretty good long-distance runner, so their kennel must be much farther down.
I can almost feel their breath on the back of my neck, sending heat waves down my spine.
Then I felt a light tap on my shoulder.
I turn around, ready to snarl at whoever did it.
Iit was just Pyri. She and Stella had brought Hunter over. Oh gods, I had forgotten Hunter in the corner. How could I be such a lousy companion?
I momentarily forgot about Zephyr, trying to speak to Pyri. But all I got back was a puzzled sound from Zephyr and a quizzical face from Pyri.
After I quickly apologised to Zephyr and disconnected, I gestured for Pyri to follow me.
Even though I barely knew where I was going, I attempted to aim myself in the direction of the nurse. Or was there a separate one for the dogs? Should I ask? No, she would think I didn't know anything, and then I'd be more embarrassed.
Pyri seemed to have noticed the blush spreading across my cheeks, and my hands fidgeting nervously against my hips.
"You ok?" She asked tentatively, touching my arm.
I responded with a forced small nod, and a quick, but fake, smile.
Pyri stood there, perfect golden eyebrows arched.
Finally caving, I said: "Okay so is there another nurse for the dogs? Or should we take Hunter somewhere else? OH MY GODS PYRI I CAN'T DO THIS!" most of my words slurred together and I blinked rapidly to avoid crying, more importantly, crying in front of Pyri.
After a second of pointed staring, Pyri wrapped her long, graceful arms around half of me and gave me a quick squeeze, before taking my hand and walking me toward the end of the building.
"Calm down Kori. They said on the intercom that the healer's for the Dogs is at the end of the kennel building. You never listen, do you?"
Pyri's semi-reassuring words did little to soothe my lurching heart, a ball of worry sitting heavy in my stomach.
