Chapter Seventeen:

[]CANIS ALATUS:[]

An enormous, fluffy dog bounded toward me.

Why me?

The massive creature had made a beeline for me, and to my dismay, it ran over anything -and anyone- that strayed into its clear path. Hold it together, Zephyr, I muttered under my breath. As the massive dog neared me, I side-stepped slightly out of the way, not wanting to be bowled over. But right before it got to me, the huge dog skidded to a stop. Reaching down to my hand, the dog gently grabbed it, Zephyr, hold it together, and brought it upward, slobber dripping down the arm of my suit. Realising what was happening, I laughed and took my hand out of his mouth and put it up to his nose. Having to reach down quite a bit, the dog touched my hand, and we bonded, a tight tether of bright light flashing in my eyes. I had always wondered what it would feel like, but it wasn't really describable. Nothing could capture this in words.

I clicked the leash onto the huge harness, trying to refrain from feeling sorry for the person who had to put it on. After I'd secured the leash onto his tight-fitting harness, I realised I probably didn't need to. But it was a tradition, so I guess we had to.

'Zephyr!!!' The large dog shouted through our new bond. 'I'm Chocolate! Do you wanna play?!' Chocolate asked enthusiastically.

"Sorry buddy, but we really gotta get to the kennels, we can play later though," I said, out loud, trying to be kind.

'Oh,' Chocolate said, plopping his butt down, and pouting. 'Oh, I'm such a bad dog. Zephyr won't even play with me.'

His voice sounded so involuntarily broken and dejected that I couldn't help but feel sad, too. I put all of my strength into attempting to drag the hulking dog to the kennels, but I was much too weak compared to him, and Chocolate wouldn't budge. I couldn't even move him an inch.

"Hey! Zephyr!" Kori called, and heat crept up into my helmet-covered face as I realised it was probably from her seeing me struggling. I wave, a look of defeat on my covered face.

"Zephyr, Hunter said, uh, you should try reaching out through your bond." She paused, nodded. "Your emotions are tethered along with your souls." Kori shouted, gesturing up to her extremely tall and unfairly lean, muscled grey-and-white Husky.

"Okay- uh, I hope this works," I replied, clenched my eyes shut and concentrated. Concentrated on shoving down the flood of sadness, and regrettably Chocolate's emotions, and fighting to replace it with good feelings from my core. Excitement, happiness, joy, and somehow, nerves. I'll have to work on filtering that out.

Suddenly, Chocolate must have had a burst of overly-hyper energy, bounding to the kennels faster than I could say 'Xenatria'.

Once we were inside and I got Chocolate back in control, or rather, as much control as I could manage, I caught a glimpse of Pyri, leading her compact Akita into a kennel. I took a moment to decide not to wave, or call out knowing she'd probably get all flustered and not want to talk to me.

A few paces down the hall, I muttered; "Ok, locker means kennel number 76." I walked up to the metal kennel, it was quite obviously one of the larger ones, fit for a dog like Chocolate.

A dog like Chocolate.

At this moment, and from this moment on, I couldn't imagine a canine more perfect than him.

Or even one like him, for that matter.

From now until my inevitable death, he was mine, and I was his.
