Your mind was running at a million miles per second, and you felt your breaths becoming shallower. This is it. This is what the entire crew has been working for, for the past few months. Today, the Fire Festival — the day that Kaido will be defeated.
Or at least you hope so.
Looking around the deck of the ship, you seemed to be the only nervous one. Even Usopp, Nami, and Chopper seemed perfectly fine. Were you being overdramatic? Everyone seemed so confident that Luffy would win, and you felt guilty. You had faith in your captain and his ability to affect others around him in positive ways, but this will be the biggest battle you'll have so far, by a long shot.
Nobody seemed to notice your negative mood, and so as to not ruin everyone's hopeful demeanor you walked to the back of the ship where it was quiet; maybe even get your thoughts organized.
Luffy almost immediately noticed your absence and went to go look for you. He found you at the back of the ship, looking at the sea over the railing. He took note of how you almost seemed deathly still, and he would've thought you were — that is, if you weren't lightly biting on your nails, a habit you had when you were nervous.
"What's up?" Luffy asked, unusually quiet. Sure, he was dumb at times, but he knew where the line was and when to act serious.
His brain racked with guesses on what had you so nervous, trying to come up with ways to comfort you. It wasn't good to be nervous before a battle, after all- oh. Luffy realizes that this is probably the reason, and his footsteps are quiet as he walks to your side, as if a single sound he makes will cause you to jolt.
"I'm...I'm fine. Don't worry," you say in response to Luffy's question, moving your fingers away from your mouth. But you're still nervous, and it's addicting like a drug — so you try to bring your fingers back up to your lips again, trying to find some kind of reprieve or distraction from the bad thoughts in your head.
Luffy's hand found yours before they could reach your mouth, and he forcibly pulled your hand back down to your side again. Your eyes widened slightly, and Luffy didn't let go. He had a determined look on his face that could almost be seen as an angry one, and you sigh, more guilt forming. You definitely ruined his mood now.
He stayed quiet for a few seconds, and the look on his face said that he didn't believe you one bit. Luffy gave you a reassuring squeeze, silently telling you that if you wanted to talk, you could. He would listen.
A shaky sigh leaves you, and your bottom lip quivers slightly — an action that doesn't go unnoticed by Luffy.
"Im..." you take a deep breath, trying to figure out a way in which to turn your thoughts into words, "scared."
It was almost a foreign concept for Luffy — to be scared. He always knew what he had to do and what needed to be done, so there was usually no hesitation in his movements. He thinks he's only been scared twice, both of which times he prefers not to dwell on or think about.
When you look up to meet his gaze, there's no hatred or judgment; only understanding. You feel yourself becoming less nervous, his face alone doing more than biting your nails ever could.
"I'm not going to lose," Luffy reassures, and he sounds so sure of himself that you can't help but to be too.
"I know." You gulp and move your eyes to face your destination — Onigashima. You were nearing closer, but as you looked at it you didn't feel scared anymore. Because when Luffy says something, he'll go through with it until the very end.
Luffy smiles widely when he turns to look at Onigashima as well. He bunches one hand up into a fist and puts his other hand on his waist. "Let's go kick Kaido's ass! You ready?"
Standing up straight, you smile determinedly as well and nod your head. "Yeah. We won't lose."
You've said it a million times before, mostly to reassure yourself, but now you know it's true. The crew will come out of this as the winners.
Luffy laughs beside you. "I'm glad you stuck with me for all this time. There's no way I could be Pirate King without you."
A sudden confession from Luffy that has your eyes widening. Another reason for you to win. Once Kaido is defeated, Luffy will be one step closer to reaching the One Piece — and the title of Pirate King.
"I'm glad, too," you say back.
Luffy smiles wider and grabs you by your wrist, dragging you back off to the front of the ship with the rest of the crew, and there's no place you'd rather be.
