Chapter 5: A Bad Story Line

(Josh Holloway as Sawyer, picture above. Please let me know if the picture isn't visible).

Brittany's POV:

I tense up as the foot steps wander closer, but then suddenly stop. Listening carefully, I hear talking in the distance. It's being lured away by a different noise. There's other people on this island? I look at Keith for an answer, as if I'd ever get one, but he doesn't even spare me a glance.

I suddenly hear a shout from outside, a ferocious yell-like growl following. After that it sounds like they're fighting whatever was after us, a Grounder I believe is what Keith called it.

While listening to the brutal yells of fighting outside, Keith pushes me as far back against the back of the cave he can. The loud noises gives me the opportunity to whisper to Keith, "What are you doing?"

He reply's, "These things rely on scent, and if they catch your scent, we're dead."

"I thought you said that wouldn't be a problem!" I jump when he forces me to spread my legs and get in between them, laying his back on my chest as if he's trying to cover me, "What are you doing?!"

Without replying, he then removes his jacket and covers my wounded leg with it. He leans on me and aims his gun at the mouth of the cave, ready to kill anything that threatens us. "I smell like the forest because I've been here longer than you, they may catch your scent. You might not want to look, just in case it gets one of them." He comments.

The fighting outside suddenly stops and I know better than to open my mouth again.

"I hate those f***ing things!" One man yells.

Another man reply's, "At least they weren't Savages."

I'm afraid to even ask what a Savage is. The things that got rid of the Grounder sound like normal people, but Keith has been here a while, considering he's named everything, and if he says there is something wrong with them, then there probably is.

They begin to walk away from the scene that just played out, but they're walking our direction. I hold my breath, like it will even help, and tuck my head in Keith's shoulder, deciding to take his advise on not looking.

Fortunately, they don't even hesitate when they walk by us and continue on their way. I release a breath when I can no longer hear them and look up from Keith.

That's when I look at him and notice he's watching me out of the corner of his eye. The second he see's that I noticed, he looks away and pulls away from me, glancing carefully out of the mouth of the cave.

Only then had I noticed I was clung to Keith like a monkey to a tree. I push the embarrassing thought away and rub my flushed face. My heart beat slowly declines as I regain my sanity.

I take Keith's jacket off of my leg and hand it to him. He takes it and commands, "Let's get out of here. Now."

I stumble out of the entrance of the cave and Keith begins to jog in the direction we were originally headed.

"Keith, I can't go that fast." I announce.

He then halts, turning on his heels, "Do you want to keep that leg?"

Not quite knowing what he's getting at I reply, "Uh... Yeah..."

"The you'll manage." He growls.

I roll my eyes and head off in his direction, but I don't jog. I walk. Well, more like limp. If I can't do something, then I can't do it. After getting about twenty meters ahead of me, he looks back and notices our distance.
