Chapter 10: Turning Savage

Brittany's POV:

I hop off of the desk and stare at him, leaning back on it. He doesn't seem as mad as he was, he seems more concerned than anything.

"Tell me what a Reaper is first." I bargain with him.

He rolls his eyes and lays it on the desk. He sighs and rubs his face.

"They're people." He states.

"Come again?" I reply.

He rolls his eyes, "They. Are. People."

"Then... What's so wrong with them?" I ask.

"They're the ones running the experiment. They created it. They're putting it into action. They're on the island because they have a chemical in their system that works like camouflage against the infected. They're studying us and keeping everything balanced and under control." He explains.

"Okay, first of all, that makes no sense what so ever. And second, how do you know this?" I ask.

"Where did you get this?" He demands, changing the subject.

I glare at him, "Like I said. I found it."

We continue walking through the woods, ready in case anything decides to make a surprise visit. I know Talon is probably following, and I don't feel right about that anymore. Maybe that's why he's following me. Keeping tabs with our group.

I don't like the idea that the cause of my misery has been conversing with me for the past three days. I don't want to believe what Keith said, but everything he has already said has been true.

If you ask me, it sounds like whoever is running this freak show is trying to create a disease. Well, the word virus is more like it. But why? Why would these people stay loyal to their leader if they're watching what he's doing to people?

What concerns me the most is what the virus is for. Biological warfare? Power?

My thoughts are interrupted when I hear a faint noise. I continue walking but I try to listen harder... It sounds like crying.

"Britt!" Someone screams, causing me to nearly jump out of my skin. I freeze in place and listen. That wasn't one of the guys because it sounded like a woman. When they realize I stopped walking Keith looks back and asks, "What is it?"

"You didn't hear that?" I whisper.

They all shake their heads and I continue to listen.

"Britt! Help me!" I turn my head left in the direction that it's coming from.

That's when it clicks..

"Britt!" My mom yells, a good distance away. I don't even stop to think as I immediately take off running.

"Britt! What the hell are you doing?!" Keith follows me from behind. I ignore him as I keep running in the direction of the yelling.

About a minute later I come up on my mother, Nora, laying on the ground bloody and hurt. She has her leg caught in some kind of trap, similar to a bear trap. The only difference is her leg is wrapped in barbed wire instead of locked between metal.

"Mom!" I yell. Just as I'm about to run up and help her, Keith grabs ahold of me and won't let go.

"What are you doing?! Let me go!" I yell at him.

"She's not your mother! It's a Siren!" He growls.

I stop struggling and look back at her.

"Britt, don't listen to him! He's lying! Please Britt, I need help! They're coming!" She yells in tears, causing me to look behind her. A Crawler growls from about one hundred yards away, stalking forward.
