Chapter 20: Why I Stay Away
(Picture of the key above, but instead of the green color, it's silver. If the picture is not visible, please let me know.) -Bri*
Brittany's POV:
I stare at the key, turning it in my hand. It's so odd looking. It looks like a computer chip, except silver, but it's incased in thin glass.
I could see it more clearly now because Talon washed the black blood off of it.
I'm currently sitting in Talon's room, wearing new clothes. I have black jeans, black combat boots, a grey shirt, and a navy blue hoodie. Instead of going through the lobby, we went straight to the room so no one would ask questions. Not only that, I had to find a new piece of cloth to cover my tracker, considering everything on me had ripped when I shifted.
"All of that, for a piece of metal." I groan.
Talon smiles a bit, "At least it wasn't the worst to come."
"Yeah Talon, thanks, that makes me feel so much better." I reply sarcastically.
He chuckles a bit and I ask, "But really, do you think this will open the garage door?"
He sighs and reply's, "I don't think so, there was no scanner. We'll have to figure that out on our own."
A silence rolls over us in the small bedroom as I watch him writing things down and drawing out floors. He suddenly stops and looks hesitant for a second but announces, "I never thanked you for that."
I look at his neck and see the bruises and small cuts are still very evident, but treated.
I laugh a little and reply, "Who's saving who's butt now?"
He laughs, showing his teeth, then asks, "How did you shift?"
I shrug and hold onto the key, "I just got angry, well, my Wolf did. And.. She took over. I let her fight."
He nods and reply's, "That's never happened before. Can you still communicate with her?"
"No, and what do you mean by that?" I ask.
"I mean, what they gave you was supposed to kill your Wolf, yet somehow, for the first time, yours pulled through." He seems to stare at the floor, but his thoughts are elsewhere.
"Why did they pick Werewolves if they were just going to kill the Wolves?" I ask.
"Because, the humans won't care about a missing Wolf in the real world; bottom line, no legal trouble." He reply's.
"What do you remember?" I ask.
He looks at me for a minute. He turns his back to me and gets back to drawing. I guess I overstepped my boundary.
"You wouldn't want to know." He reply's, guilt just barely audible, but still there.
"Are you going to announce the plan?" I ask, changing the subject.
He nods, "In the morning. It will go into effect the day after."
He still doesn't look up, so I announce, "I'm gonna go check on Zoey."
He just nods and I lay the key on his desk, then step out.
I lied, I checked on Zoey after I got dressed, she's fine and will be walking in a few hours. I just felt bad for asking something like that; something I shouldn't have. Whatever it was, I guess it was probably best if it had stayed forgotten.
I shake my head and walk down the motel hall to Keith's room.
I knock and hear shuffling on the other side, then he calls, "Come in!"
