Chapter 11: Black Blood
Brittany's POV:
I lean against the metal door, trying to breath. I watch the figure in the office, which appears to be sitting down in a chair, waiting for it to move. I take the only weapon I have, which would be my assigned knife, and take hesitant steps forward.
Once I reach the office door, I peek inside. The back of the chair is facing me and I can just barely see the top of the mans head. I don't move for the longest time, waiting for something to happen. Growing impatient, I step forward and put my hand on the chair, quickly spinning it around.
I jump and back up when I see nothing but the corps of a man, the smell invading my nose causing me to gag. I pull my jacket collar over my nose to prevent as much of the smell as possible.
He was a guard. His uniform confirms it. Well, if he's a guard, maybe he has a weapon. I go around to his desk, pushing his chair away with my foot, and open the drawers. I find absolutely nothing but paperwork and files. Just a normal office.
I scurry out of the office, not wanting to be around the man anymore. I head off down the hallway, keeping as quiet as possible. Maybe I can find a different route back to Keith.
There is another room on the right, so I head towards it. Once at the door, I notice it's cracked so I peek in. I gasp when I see a Grounder and put my back against the wall beside the door. It's pacing the room slowly.
When I think it has it's back to the door, I peek in again and see a pistol laying on the ground beside what used to be a man. I hope that one is dead. I lean against the wall again and debate if it's worth it.
The room is a fair size, I might have time to grab it before it turns around, then again, it might not be loaded.
The last time I ran into one of those head on, Talon had to help me, and I don't think Talon is going to come to the rescue right now.
I don't even get a chance to decide when the door swings open, nearly hitting me. A yelp comes out of my mouth before I can stop it and it turns towards me, letting out a scream like growl. It's wearing a uniform as well.
I take a few steps back and it charges at me. Fortunately I'm quick enough that when I throw myself left it misses me, hitting the concrete. I run inside the room and slam the door shut, praying these things are too stupid to open a door.
I bend down and grab the pistol, only for the one who was apparently just resting to stand up. I back up and aim at it's head, pulling the trigger. It staggers backwards, but still doesn't falter it's pace towards me. I release another round and it finally falls to the floor.
I check the magazine and see I still have four rounds left. Sliding it back in, I take a breath. This is the only way I'm going to get out of here.
Without thinking I grab the door handle and swing it open, letting the thing inside. I shoot before it can even target me, causing it to fall. Not wanting to waste another round, I bring my foot up and slam it down onto it's head, hoping to do what Talon did.
That's so disgusting.
I rush out of the room and shut the door. I feel and make sure my knife stayed in my jacket pocket, luckily it did.
I look up at the ceiling and see a security camera that is still working. Maybe they're watching through that... I'm thinking about breaking it, but then I get an idea.
I go back to the security office and see the camera feed is still there. I reverse it, hoping to see what happened. A few minutes later and I find the right day, pressing play. It shows a lab. There's only three cameras leading to this computer.
