Chapter 9: Keith's Wrath
Brittany's POV:
"Climb the tree, now." Sawyer instructs as he grabs onto the nearest branch and hauls himself up, grabbing my hand and helping pull me up as well. We continue this until we're about fifteen feet up.
I look down and notice them sniffing around the tower. They probably caught our scent.
I look at Sawyer and I see him ready with his gun, just in case. "Just see if they'll pass, there may be more nearby." I tell him, going by what I've learned from Keith as well as personal experience.
They begin to sniff out our trail as the get closer to us, about twenty meters away. That's when I happen to look up at the tower and see Keith looking at us in confusion from the window, then he looks down at the Crawlers and he quickly disappears.
A few seconds later and I see Keith moving the books from the broken window. Looks like I'll have some explaining to do. He gets the hunting rifle and aims at them, but doesn't fire. He's waiting to see if they'll pass, just as I told Sawyer.
The second their right below us, they split up and one stays beside the tree we're on and the second one goes to investigate further. Man, these things are freaky looking.
It continues to sniff the tree, probably confused on why the trail ends.
Don't look up, don't look up, don't look up...
Sure enough, it freezes in place and begins to growl. It then raises it's head and it's eyes connect with mine. I jump when suddenly an arrow, not a bullet, but an arrow hit's the Crawler in the head. A few seconds later and it falls to the ground, going limp.
The second Crawler comes out of nowhere and hits the side of the tree from behind us, causing me to lose my balance and drop fifteen feet.
The air is knocked out of my lungs and I gasp. Sawyer shoots and hits it in the side, but that only slows it down. It comes running at me and I go to grab my shotgun that I dropped when I fell, but by the time I'm ready to shoot, I see it's dead on the ground with an arrow through it's head as well.
Sawyer begins to make his way down the tree. I look up and see about ten meters away is a man sitting high up in a tree, and not just any man, but Talon. He was sitting where we wouldn't see him.
He smiles, then takes off through the tree's so Sawyer doesn't catch him.
How many times is he going to save my sorry self?
"Are you alright?" Sawyer asks as he jumps down the rest of the way, helping me up.
"I'm fine, lets go before more show up." I state. Just as I turn to jog back, I run into Keith. He glares at me, angry for the fact I left.
"C'mon." Sawyer interrupts the tension and picks me up bridal style, running to the tower for me.
"I can walk." I complain.
He ignores me and sets me down by the ladder, staying right behind me the whole way up. Once we get there, that's when the flood gates open.
"Why the h*ll were you out there?!" Keith growls.
"I apologize your Highness, but I had to use the bathroom." I reply calmly.
"And you couldn't have waited until morning? Which is one hour away?" He gets in my face. By then, my dad's Alpha gene begins to show.
"Hey! Back off, alright?!" I yell, angry for the fact that he thinks he can control me, "It's my life to gamble with! And you told me this part of the woods was safe!"
