Chapter 22: Medical Ward

Brittany's POV:

Before heading to the stairs I go over to Sagan and take the key off of her neck. We don't need it now, but it may come in handy later.

I turn back to Talon and examine his face. He has a busted lip, a scratch below his left eye, a bloody nose, and I'm pretty sure a few bruises on his stomach.

"I'm fine." He takes my hand off of his face and takes the key from me, putting it on his necklace with the other one. It's just a regular silver colored key.

We catch up with the guys and I notice Keith waiting by the stairs. But as usual, Marcus is snooping around. Sawyer looks tired. He's just leaning against the desk with his eyes closed.

"Should we sleep here for the night? Everything can be sealed closed in here." I ask, referring to the doors that can keep us safe.

Keith doesn't even look at me, but Sawyer sits down in a desk chair, propping his feet up and putting his hands behind his head, "I'll take that offer."

I sigh when Keith goes to the other side of the room and sits down on the floor, leaning his head back on the wall. I take a right and go to the control panel, pushing the red button and making the doors seal shut, including the one to the stairs.

This looks like it used to be an office space.

I want to check on Keith, but I would prefer my head to stay on my body, so I decide to let him cool off for a few days before I try to talk to him.

I go to the opposite side of the room and sit in the corner, leaning my head back. Talon sits up against a desk, a good ways away from everyone, and messes with his knife.

I lean my head forward and take the rubber band out of my hair and comb my fingers through it. It's grown past my shoulders. I don't like it. I take my knife from my belt and grab a fistful of my hair, chopping it off to the original length above my shoulders. It's not a masterpiece, but it did the trick.

Once I'm done I happen to glance at Talon and see him look away. I sigh and put my hair back up, even though it's not much.

I lean my head back again and try to find sleep.

My eyes snap open when I hear walking. I look around and see everyone is asleep, no one moving.

I look up at the ceiling when I realize it's coming from above. This isn't the average Grounder stumbling around, this is human walking, straight across the hall on the ground floor.

Apparently Keith heard it too because I look over to him and see he's now awake, looking up as well. He looks at me, confirming it's not just him, and we both stand.

I start to get worried when I hear them coming down the stairs.

"Get up." I snap, but not too loudly at the rest of the guys. Eventually everyone stands and listens as they get closer.

"Hide." Talon snaps, and everyone does so. He pulls me under the desk with him and we shuffle to get out of view. A few seconds later and everyone freezes when the door slides open with a loud beep.

I hear the footsteps walk past our desk and they stop at the panel, opening the doors.

"Everything is clear, Sir." The man speaks.

"Is the dog still there?" Another male voice speaks through a radio. The voice is oddly familiar.

"Uh, I don't hear it coming, Sir. Should I check on it?" He asks.
