[Friday]
While at school, I hear an announcement, "Imogen Adams to Principal Clanton's office"
"Shit" I whisper
The girls and I meet up in the hallway outside of the office when we see Imogen walk out breathing heavy a few moments later. She walks over to us, "We heard the announcement and assembled. You okay?" Tabby asks
"Uh...Karen dropped out of the race" Imogen says
"Shit. Cause of us?" Noa asks
"I don't know. Can you think of another reason?" Imogen asks
"And, um, she also took responsibility for trashing the posters" Imogen says
"See? Female Patrick Bateman" Tabby says
"And I...I am going to be Spirit Queen" She chokes out
Tabby places her hand on Imogen's arm, "Hey, Imogen, talk to us. We got you" Tabby says
"Oh, you guys—you guys—" She says breathing heavily
Tabby grabs Imogen, "Bathroom, now" I say
We walk into the bathroom and Imogen sits down on the little bench as tears fall, "Clanton said...Like mother, like daughter. But I...am nothing like my mom. She never would've done what I did showing that video" Imogen says
"No, no, no. It wasn't just you. It was all of us. We made a pact, like the Loser's Club" Tabby says
"My mom would've taken a hammer to the phone, not kept it for months like I did" Imogen says
"But Beasley confessed—" Noa says
"That doesn't make what we did right. We messed up with Karen. And all I can think about now is...what would my mom say if she were here? Karen was right. I'm a terrible person" Imogen says
"No, Imogen, don't let her gaslight you. You are many things, but a terrible person is not one of them" Tabby says
"Yeah, the terrible person is still Karen. That hasn't changed" Faran says
"And I think it's badass that you're going to be Millwood High's first pregnant Spirit Queen" We all laugh, "That's, like, meaningful" Noa says
"I'm not going. I can't handle a school dance right now" Imogen says
"Okay, I'm not just suggesting this because after Moonlight, Perks of Being a Wallflower is my favorite boy coming of age movie, but...what if we went together?" Tabby asks
"Who?" Faran asks
"Us. Us six as, like...friends?" Tabby asks
"I can't" She lifts her foot, "My ankle monitor. But you five should definitely go. Be young and free and shit" Noa says
I feel bad for her, "I've never been to a dance...in real life" Mouse says
"Have you ever done anything in real life?" Noa asks sarcastically
"Maybe this makes me a terrible person, but...I don't feel guilty at all. And I'm definitely down for the dance. This hot guy from Swan Lake is gonna be there, and shockingly...I think he's straight" Faran says
We all laugh before they look at me, "As long as I don't have to wear a dress, I'm in" I say
"Imogen? Will you accept your birthright as queen?" Tabby asks
"I uh...I don't even have a dress that fits" Imogen says
"Relax, ladybird. If it's about a dress, my mom can help with that" Tabby says
[Saturday: Night of the Dance]
The girls and I meet at Tabby's house to get ready with Imogen. I see Noa's here, "Noa, you're here?" I ask
"Yeah, the sheriff was being...generous" She says
I'm skeptical but let it slide, "I'm glad you're here, you know being young and free and shit" I say quoting her from yesterday
She giggles before we all walk up to Imogen's room. Tabby knocks on Imogen's bedroom door. She opens it, "Look who's here! Your glam squad has arrived" Tabby says
Then we all walk in before walking to a mirror. They all start putting make up on before Noa tries to put some on me, "Oh no, no. I don't do that stuff" I say dodging it
She looks at me and gives me puppy dog eyes, "Please?" She asks
Damn, how could she look even cuter? I sigh, "Okay, just a little bit, not too much" I say
She smiles, "Yay!" She says
I shake my head, "What did I just agree to?" I ask smiling
"Can't take it back now" She says smirking
She grabs my hand before sitting me down on the bed. She grabs the mascara before sitting down next to me then she turns me to face her, "Okay, keep you eyes open" She instructs
I feel a lump in my throat so I nod my head. She leans closer to me, I feel my heart beating out of my chest. She applies the mascara before leaning away and grabbing lipgloss, "Part your lips slightly" She whispers
I do as she says, still not being able to form words. When she leans forward, I feel her hot breath ghost against my lips, my heart starts to beat faster than I ever thought it could. As she applies the lipgloss, we make eye contact. Her piercing brown eyes stare into my green ones. We get lost in the moment, it's like we're the only two in the room.
We both start to lean in when we hear, "Uh hmm"
We jump back slightly and look to see Tabby smiling, "Ready to get dressed?" She asks
Noa pulls away quickly, "Oh...umm...yeah" Noa says
She walks away before Tabby looks at me, raising her eyebrow, "What was that?" She asks smirking
"Uh...n—nothing" I say nervous
"That was not nothing" She says
I look at her, "Tabs, drop it please" I beg
She nods her head, "If it helps, I think you'd be a way better girlfriend to her than Shawn is as her boyfriend" She whispers
I look at her, "Thanks Tabs" I say before we walk back to the other girls
We all get dressed in our outfits. I put on my black suit with red accents with a black undershirt. I don't wear a tie, and keep the first two buttons undone showing some skin. I put on my silver chain accompanied by my silver rings and silver watch. I keep my hair down, curling it and parting it to the side. I place my black formal sneakers on before spraying my perfume and putting on deodorant.
Once we are all dressed, I notice that I am unintentionally matching with Noa. She is wearing a deep red spaghetti strap dress with her hair down and wavy. She looks beautiful. They are finishing up their make up in front of the mirror, "Favorite dance movie of all time?" Tabby asks, "Mine's Suspiria, shocking no one" She continues
"Center Stage, obviously" Faran says
"Ooh, Dirty Dancing, of course" Imogen says
"Uh, the Step Up franchise" Noa says
"Uhh...Footloose" I say
"West Side Story" Mouse says
"Okay, truth time, I love it too. When I was a little girl, I really, really wanted to be—" Noa says
"Anita?" Tabby asks
"Fuck that! I wanted to me Maria" Noa says
"Oh" Tabby says
"So I could jump Tony's bones" Noa says
They laugh, "I mean, I'm serious" She says
"Oh my god, I'm telling Shawn" Faran says
I roll my eyes, Why is he always brought up? I glance in the mirror and see Noa looking at me. When we make eye contact before she quickly looks away, "You guys...when we get to the dance tonight, I'm gonna find Karen and apologize. And I'm gonna give her my crown. Or try to, at least" Imogen says
We nod our heads, "Sounds like an excellent plan and we'll help you" Tabby says
