[Rocky's Diner]
The girls and I walk in to see Imogen serving people coffee, "Table for five?" Tabby asks
Imogen sits us at a booth, grabs us some drinks and food before pulling up a chair for herself, "What are you guys doing here?" She asks us
"Um. Look, we know you're bummed that we're not all in the same section at school, so we thought we'd surprise you" Tabby says
"Surprise" Faran says
Imogen chuckles nervously, "Is that not okay?" Mouse asks
"Of course it's okay. I mean, why...why wouldn't it be okay?" Imogen asks us
"What's up with your name tag?" Noa asks and we realize it says, Leigh
"Oh, um...it's just an old one they had lying around" Imogen says
"Looks pretty new" Faran says
There's a moment of silence, "Imogen, isn't your mom's middle name Leigh?" Tabby asks
"I'm sorry. Am I missing something here?" Imogen asks
"You tell us. Uh, what is the deal with your name tag, really? And why are you working way the hell out here, in the middle of nowhere?" Tabby asks
"Yeah. Weren't there any jobs in town?" I ask
"I saw a help anted sign at the Millwood Creamery. You like ice cream" Mouse says
"Yeah. But I also like working here. You know, being here. Outside of Millwood where nobody knows me, and I can turn off my brain. Be someone else, even. Not me" Imogen says
"Imogen, uh, what does that mean, you get to be someone else?" Tabby asks
"Leigh, time to marry the ketchups" Imogen's boss tells her
"My break's over" She stands up, "But thank you for coming by. It means a lot. Truly" Imogen says before placing the chair back and walking away
[Wednesday]
The girls and I walk into our class to see Imogen sitting at one of the desks, "Imogen? I didn't see you this morning. Is everything okay?" Tabby asks as we sit down
"Just wanted to get here bright and early. And yes, everything's amazing. Why wouldn't it be?" Imogen tells us
"You seem...turned up" Faran says
"Yeah, like...super stressed" Noa says
"Who? Me? What would I be stressed about? Everything's fine" Imogen says
"Sure sounds like it" I whisper
"Did you get permission to switch sections or something?" Mouse asks
"What are you doing here, Imogen? Again?" Mrs. Gibbons asks
"Preparing for the Keystone Exams. What else would I be doing?" Imogen asks
"Lord, here we go" Faran mumbles to herself
"This isn't going to end well" I whisper
"Look, Mrs. Gibbons. I was always supposed to be in this class with my friends. Someone, I'm not saying you, but someone must have gotten their wires crossed. And whatever. No harm, no foul. But I am not leaving" Imogen tells her
"Oh shit" I say
"Uh" Tabby stands up, "Mrs. Gibbons, so sorry for crossed wires. Imogen had a...a rough night. Uh, but we will take a few minutes and get everyone on the same page. Be right back" Tabby looks at us, "Little help here, ladies? Thank you" Tabby says
We all stand up and get Imogen out of the classroom. We head to the bathroom to talk where Imogen sits at the bench with her head in her hands, "Okay. What the hell was that? And don't keep telling us you're fine, cause you're clearly not" Tabby tells her
