The news about the fire in the former station officer's house spread quickly. However, even more quickly, it was joined by information about the disappearance of several firefighters or inspectors from the Newtown investigation group. All this news flowing from Newtown to Pontypandy made the atmosphere at the fire station more tense than usual. Station Officer Jones had barely left his office since the fire call, while the entire team slipped through as quietly as possible, all silently begging for no more calls. They preferred to sit through their entire shift in silence rather than risk it being another fire call with explosions.
"I hope it's at least quieter today," Liam sighed, slumping into his chair.
"Don't say hop," Chris warned.
"You really think this doesn't seem suspicious?" Tony asked uncertainly. "From what Hannah said..."
"Wait," Chris interrupted him. "When did you talk to her? I thought she was in Newtown now, but you spent all your free time at home."
"What are phones for," Tony teased, waving his phone in the air.
"And weren't you the one who left a note in the kitchen several times recently, telling us you'd be back later and not to lock the door from the inside?" Chris teased back. "You see we can still connect the dots."
"Fine," Tony gave in with a sigh. "I was dating Hannah, but I found out some interesting things about the newspapers. She told me that it comes out during the strange fires around Newtown, and some of them even had interviews with inspectors, but never Penny. It took Hannah a lots of time to find out who's on the team investigating these cases," Tony summarized what he'd found out.
"It won't do us any good anyway, since we still can't convince the others, let alone Penny or Station Officer Jones, to meet up," Chris sighed.
"I love your optimism, Chris," Tony teased. "What about you, Liam? Has Sarah got any ideas on how to get them to talk?"
"Not really," Liam looked at Tony sadly. "I haven't seen her in a week."
No sooner had he said this than they heard quiet footsteps on the stairs, and a moment later, as all three of them turned around, they saw Sarah hiding behind the wall as soon as she left the stairwell. Liam jumped up from the chair and in one fluid movement pulled Sarah towards him, taking her hand gently.
Chris cleared his throat and pointed at the clock, Station Officer Jones would be here in five minutes. It was better not to risk a mishap, because, since the fire in Mr. Steele's, he was strangely nervous, so everyone was on their toes a little, careful not to make any mistakes in his presence.
"It's good you came," Liam looked at Sarah fondly. "I missed you."
"And I was afraid you only wanted information," Sarah teased him with a smile.
"I missed you too," Liam whispered.
"We're here all the time," Chris interrupted them in a slightly bored tone, pointing at himself and Tony.
"Don't play the innocent, Chris," Tony teased Chris. "Liam at least had the courage to tell Sarah how he felt, and you keep being a coward in front of Julia," Tony summed up his friend briefly.
"Are you calling me a coward?" Chris looked at Tony defiantly.
"I'm just saying what is the truth," Tony shrugged innocently and, not caring about Chris' more than offended expression, leaned against the back of the chair.
"Okay, guys. I didn't come here to listen to your arguments," Sarah interrupted them, and Liam, standing a step behind her, tried but failed to stifle a chuckle.
