After a nearly fifteen hour drive Skye parked the car at the hospital where Anna had told her to go. The second the car was turned off Anna was out of it. She just about ran into the hospital. Skye followed behind her. By the time she was through the hospital doors she could see Anna smash Ryder in a hug. A groan escaped his lips as she did though this time it wasn't because she was showing him affection it was because the action truly hurt.
"I'm...." Skye couldn't help but notice the pain in his voice as he spoke. "Fine Anna. J-Just let me go.... Please." Anna quickly let him go before she got her first good look at him. He was using crutches his left leg wrapped tightly in a bandage. His hands just like his leg were wrapped in bandages. His face had bruising and cuts all along it, his clothes and skin covered in soot. For a second Ryder looked past Anna and his eyes met Skyes. The look he gave her said it all, he was grateful of the fact that she had been there for Anna through all of it.
"Ry.... You gonna be alright to...?" He nodded at Anna's question.
"Let's get you both back home then." Skyes words were soft as she looked between Anna and Ryder.
"Thank you." His words were quiet. She nodded before they slowly made their way out of the hospital. They both could tell that he was struggling with his crutches but he wouldn't admit it.
"Need some help?" Skye questioned quietly as she saw him struggling to get into the car. A defeated sigh escaped his lips before he nodded. Anna quietly moved to help Skye get Ryder into the car. Both of them could tell that the slightest touch along his body was causing him pain. "Are you sure you should be going home?" Anna had to stop herself from hitting Skye.
"I'm alright. I just want to go home." Anna couldn't help but notice he was calm, usually when she questioned him wanting to leave the hospital early he would snap at her. "I'm just bruised to fuck, anything is going to hurt." He admitted before they both could see him lay across the backseat. Anna reached back grabbing a pillow she knew was under the seat before she offered it to him. "Thank you." He said as he positioned it where he needed it. Skye and Anna exchanged a quick glance before Skye started the car.
"Do you want me to drive?" Skye shook her head.
"I'm alright for now. I'm sure I'm going to start to get tired at some point so when I do you can take over. But for now. Just sleep Anna. You need it." Anna flashed her a grateful smile before she nodded.
"Just wake me up if you need me. You know I don't mind." Skye nodded before she could see Anna's eyes close. Quietly she began the drive back to their houses. After nearly an hour she could hear a groan escape Ryder's lips before he sat up.
"You alright?" Skye carefully questioned.
"I'm just sore. But it's what I get for staying too long on the roof." She looked back at him for a moment a puzzled look along her face. "You know how I said I fall through floors a lot...." She slowly nodded before her eyes went back to the road. "They thought the roof was still safe because the fire had been out for hours with no sign of it wanting to collapse. Well I get up there. All was fine until I got near the ac unit. Thankfully the ac unit broke through all the floors beneath me so I just fell six floors down instead of crashing through six floors."
"And you're not in the hospital?!" He chuckled at Skyes words before groaning.
"I didn't break anything. Just got some burns and tweaked my knee. I'll be fine in a few days." He said quietly.
"So why were you down in Florida?" She questioned as she saw him get comfortable. It's almost as if she knew he wasn't going to sleep on the ride home.
"There was a massive fire down there yesterday. They wanted us to do recovery and see which buildings were safe or not because they had used every fire department in the surrounding areas to help out and were all spent. The team I'm with usually gets calls when they're in need of desperate help. With Florida being such a short drive I said fuck it. Was the only one that went because it shouldn't have been such a big deal but.... Turned out to be.... Nobody expected to have to dig the recovery guy out from under five feet of dirt and wood." Skyes head just about snapped back towards him.
"You were buried under shit?" He nodded.
"It happens. Thankfully wasn't brick or concrete. That's the worst. Had a cozy little pocket next to the ac unit where I was just waiting. Just wish I hadn't lost my gloves and boot. Fucking shit was hot." Skye was all but dumbfounded at how calm and normal he sounded with all of it. It was almost like it was a normal occurrence for him.
"So why the text then?" The question slipped out and she almost instantly turned red.
"I.... Honestly...." She discreetly looked back and could see Ryder looking up at Anna. "There are times when you're in the middle of shit and all you can think is fuck I should've said this or should've done that. I.... I honestly thought that it was my time. I was under there for nearly two hours and it was.... I was having trouble getting a full breath. I didn't think that my phone would pick it up but it needed to be said. I couldn't go out knowing that they didn't know that they've always been my family." Ryder quietly admitted. Skye looked back at him for a moment before she spoke softly.
"They know, trust me."
