Celestine gulped. His confession made her swoon. The rosiness of her cheeks became greatly visible.
A vivid memory of Samuel's answer to Royce's question rushed back to her. The feelings she had inside diminished.
"Do you expect me to believe that? Didn't you just tell everyone last night, including me, that you like Annie," Celestine asked while placing her hands on her hips.
"I'm serious, Celestine. I like you. I said 'yes' because.. I was.. trying to make you jealous," He answered in a serious, soft voice, his eyes intently gazing at her.
"Sorry. I still don't believe you," Celestine responded. Her cheeks blushed even more when she learned that he just said 'yes' to make her jealous.
Samuel was still fixedly looking straight at her with unwavering attention. He didn't know what to do to make her believe. He just stood there, examining and studying Celestine's radiant face.
"What! You'll just stand there and be quiet?! I'm going back to Manila! Now! And you can't stop m--" Celestine hollered at him. But before she could even finish the last word of her last sentence, Samuel's lips gently pressed against hers. The hands of time stopped and her eyes widened in shock. Her heart fluttered uncontrollably. She didn't know the reason why his lips seemed to fit perfectly on hers. He was so gentle, so cautious. He brought his hands lightly on her hips, drawing her in and leaning her closer to him. That's when she knew she couldn't resist the fact that she wanted to kiss him back. Slowly, she closed her eyes, and gently responded to his kiss.
The moment aroused their hearts. The blistering sun beat down on them, putting them in the spotlight. The gentle pressure on their lips electrocuted them. It was only a moment before he pulled away. He yanked himself away from her after realising what happened.
"I'm sorry, Celestine. What I did.. That wasn't right. I'm sorry," he apologised in a throttled voice, placing one of his hands on his forehead in embarrassment.
Celestine bowed her head down, looking at the ground. She didn't know how to respond. She was afraid of seeming too keen and willing or too disappointed. She didn't know how to react, to the kiss or to Samuel's sudden show of regret.
"I shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry," he apologised again. "I'm not stopping you anymore, Celestine. You can go back now to Manila and I won't force you anymore to believe me."
