Maverick

I stood outside her house in the pouring rain, needing to do something that I hated. "So, this is how you treat me? After four whole years?"

Tears slid down her face as she watched me remove my wedding band. "It was a mistake, Maverick. I love you."

"I have done nothing but tried my best to be the best husband and father, yet I am not good enough."

"It was one mistake."

"And something that you will never be able to take back."

"Please give me another chance."

"He is the highlight in your life, I know that I never have been."

"Please don't go."

I glanced at her one last time before I shut the door, ready to have a fresh start.

*** Six years earlier: "Are you going to meet us at the bar after the game?"

"Can't."

"Why?"

"I have to ask Lexie."

Tyler scowled. "You're 27 years old, why would you even consider asking your girlfriend if you can do things? You are at an age where you can do whatever you want without her permission."

"I hate arguing with her, that's why."

"You seem like a little bitch when you say that. Are you aware?"

"Yeah."

"Then why do you feel that you have to ask Lexie every time we do something?"

"I don't know."

Tyler shook his head. "She has you trapped, and you need to get out before it is too late."

"I can't just leave Lexie, I'm not like that."

"You are capable of finding any girl that you would like without a problem, yet you choose that psycho?"

"I'll hop on Xbox with you guys later, deal?"

Tyler shrugged. "I guess."

Shortly after I drove home, I received a call from Callie, hearing the same lecture from Tyler. "You're encouraging me to leave her too?"

"I just want to see my brother happy, Mav. You seem miserable whenever I see you with Brea and I want you to be happy for once."

"I am happy, Callie."

"Every day is another day of hell with her. I mean, she doesn't even support you. Why would you want to be with someone who's not supportive? You've dreamt of playing in the NHL for years and you finally landed that opportunity. You should have a girlfriend who actually enjoys it and doesn't complain every time that you have a game."

"I just got home, I'll call you later."

"Alright, talk later."

I entered the apartment, not surprised to see Lexie sitting on the couch with a book in her hand. "Finally! Where were you?"

"I was at practice, we have a game tonight."

"But we were supposed to go to dinner with my father tonight!"

"In case you forgot, I told you several times. But I got you a ticket if you want to go."

Lexie shook her head. "I would rather go shopping, have fun at your stupid game."

I went to the bedroom and grabbed a spare pair of jeans and a sweatshirt, hoping that I would be able to get through the rest of the night with my sanity intact.
