Jayden

"What an asshole!"

"Tell me about it."

"I thought he would like you back."

"You and me both but I meant nothing to him."

Kayla sighed. "I'm not trying to take sides, but maybe he doesn't want commitment because of Lexie and Mya."

"I am nothing like either of them, but he didn't even give me a chance."

"He'll come around, Jay. Just give it some time."

"But I don't want to wait!"

"I understand, but things might work out if you are patient."

"You're the one who told me to tell him!"

"I know and I am sorry, I didn't think he would react that way either, but things happen for a reason."

"Thanks for the encouragement, Kayla. I knew I would get my heart broken. God, I was so stupid."

Maverick

"So, how'd you react?"

"I tried to be nice about it."

Dale shook his head. "What'd you say?"

"That I had to focus on Mya."

"So, you said it nicely then?"

"I think so, yeah."

Suddenly, my phone rang, and I saw an incoming phone call from Mya. "Excuse me a moment."

Before I answered, I went outside so Dale wouldn't hear me. "Hello?"

"Hey, baby."

"Can we talk?"

"Sure, I'll come home now."

I got off the phone and waited for Mya's arrival, more than ready to confront her.

After Mya entered the house, she came upstairs and sensed the anger I felt. "Are you okay?"

I stood up and shoved the screenshots and photos of her that I took of her and JJ. "What the fuck is this?"

"Mav..."

"The only thing I asked was loyalty. Why should I be with you?"

Mya looked at me, tears sliding down her face. "Are you serious?"

"I've made my mistakes, but I have done nothing but been kind to you. I spoiled the shit out of you at one point, but you can't deny the proof that I have."

"Mav, please. Let's figure this out together."

"You fucked two of my teammates so do me a favor: Once the divorce papers are ready, you will be adding your signature. So, get out. Now."

"Babe, please..."

"No. I'll have your shit packed up in the morning."

"I am not going anywhere."

"I'm done with you and your bullshit, I have my own life to live, and I am perfectly capable of living without you."

"You will ALWAYS be mine, baby. Don't forget that because I will do anything it takes."

After Mya slammed the door shut, I felt a mix of anger and sadness. I've never been a guy that's really gotten sensitive about anything, but this was the final straw for me.

*** Two weeks later: After I got home from practice, I saw an incoming call from Mya. "What do you want?"

"Nice to talk to you too, Mav."

"How's JJ?"

"We didn't date, Mav. He was just a fling."

"What the hell do you want?"

"You."

"The divorce papers are finalized so why the fuck should I even think about continuing this conversation?"

"Mav, please. Don't hang up."

"What the hell did I do for you to cheat on me? I really thought that you were the one for me, Mya."

"Mav, please. Can we meet up? I need to talk to you."

"About what?"

"Mav..."

"Why?"

"Please. I need to see you."

"No. It would be a waste of my time and yours."

"You don't love me anymore?"

I could tense the pain in her voice, but I had no reason to forgive her. "I have zero reason to forgive you, Mya. What don't you understand? You fucking cheated on me and you're acting like it's no big deal."

"Mav, you're wrong. I've been hating myself ever since. Can we please meet?"

"You have twenty minutes to say whatever you have to say to me. Got it?"

"Thank you so much, meet me at my house?"

"Yeah."

By the time I got to Mya's, her Range Rover was parked in the driveway, and I took a deep breath before knocking. The moment she looked at me, she smiled. "Hey."

"Hey."

"Do come in."

Nodding, I followed her inside and sat down on one of the stools in the kitchen. "What do you want?"

"You."

"Do you not get it? You cheated on me, and you think that it's okay for me to just believe that you wouldn't cheat on me again."

"Look, I cheated, and I am so fucking sorry. You have no idea how sorry I am. I hate myself more and more every day, realizing that you've moved on."

"Damn straight."

"Mav, I can't let go of you."

"What reason should I have to even believe anything coming out of your mouth right now?"

"Trust is something that's hard to get back and..."

"Mya, look. I loved you and I did nothing to deserve what you did to me. Why should I even allow you to keep talking right now? I don't know. But I am giving you one last chance to explain yourself."

She nodded. "I am sure you shouldn't even talk to me right now, but I need you."

"Why? I'm sure you have plenty of men wrapped around your finger in case another one does not work out."

"Excuse me?"

"You cheated on me! With God knows how many others."

"Mav..."

Shaking my head, I stood up. "I should not have come here."

"Mav, wait." Mya grabbed my arm just as I reached for the doorknob and kissed me. "Please come back to me." She whispered.
