Maverick

Once I got home, I stupidly scrolled through my phone and pulled up Lexie's number.

Can you call me?

Lexie: Is everything okay?

Maverick: No...

Lexie: I can come over if you want.

Maverick: Please.

I knew it was a bad idea to contact Lexie, but she was having my kid after all, and I needed to speak to her.

A few minutes later, I heard the front door open, and she entered the kitchen. "Hey."

"Hey."

"Are you alright?"

"Honestly, no."

"What's going on?"

"Just feeling betrayed right now."

"I understand and I do want to apologize, Mav. For everything."

"It just was really hard dealing with how controlling you were."

"I know, but I want to change. For our child."

"I really want to believe you, Lexie. I do, but I can't get over how you treated me."

"Can you just... think about giving me another chance? Please?"

"I don't know."

"Mav... I am having your baby in seven months, and I don't want to raise him by myself. I spoke to Selena, and she really opened up my eyes about everything. I messed up and I want to change. For him."

I knew how Lexie treated me, and I really didn't know how to feel or what to say.

"Can you give me two weeks to think about it?"

"Yes, of course."

"I would make the decision now, but I need to think about it considering how you treated me, Lexie."

"I completely understand. I love you, Mav. I know we aren't dating anymore, but I am sorry for everything."

"I can't say that, but I'll think about it. Okay?"

"Thank you." She kissed me briefly and left when I noticed three texts from Mya:

Mav, please answer :(

Mya: I messed up and I lost you.

Mya: I need to see you. I am outside.

I heard a knock on my door and saw Mya standing outside. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"You really are that mad at me?"

"You've been hooking up with one of my teammates, how the hell is that okay?"

"It's not."

I got a call from Dale suddenly and I stepped outside. "Hello?"

"Are you still thinking about proposing?"

"No."

"Ty and I were talking in terms of her cheating. Personally, if I were you, I'd follow through and see how it goes."

"Why should I even consider that?"

"To see if she's actually going to do that bullshit again. You know... for shits and giggles, I guess."

"So, just fake my feelings?"

"It's worth a shot."

I did love Mya very much, but at the same time, I was truly interested in seeing if she would actually change or not.

"Mav, I'm sorry. I doubted you and I feel terrible."

"As you should."

"Mav, please. I love you."

"I... love you too, Mya."

"Really?"

"I shouldn't, but yeah. I do."

She smiled. "So, you forgive me?"

"That will take a very long time, Mya. Cheating isn't something that is immediately forgivable, but I want to be with you."

"You have no idea how bad I've wanted to hear that."

"My sister will be pissed, but I can't stay away from you."

"Neither can I, Mav. Do you want to spend the night with me tonight?"

"I would love to."

"Good."

*** Four months later: "I still can't believe you gave her another chance, Mav."

I looked at Callie and shrugged. "I love her, Callie."

She took a sip of her wine and rolled her eyes. "Don't complain to me if she cheats on you again."

"I did end up buying the ring."

"You what?"

"Tyler convinced me."

"What do you mean?"

"I do love her, but it's my only way of finding out if she will change or not."

"When did you buy it?"

"Last month."

"When are you giving it to her?"

"For her birthday."

"When's that?"

"Sunday."

"Oh, that's in two days."

"Yeah, I know."

"Well, I am sure she'll love it. You're positive that this is what you want?"

"I am honestly scared to do it, but... yeah. I am positive."

"Well, I just want to see you happy, Mav. But I swear to God, if that bitch betrays you again, don't be surprised if we have a scuffle."

"You aren't the type of person to become violent."

"When it comes to my big brother, I will do whatever I need to protect him."

I smiled and hugged her. "Thanks, Callie."

"Have you spoken to Cam?"

"Fuck no."

She smiled. "Good. Do you know how you are going to do it?"

"I'm sure she'll like it. I'm going to have her come on the ice during the award ceremony and do it there."

Callie laughed. "How do you know that you'll get one?"

"Coach already told me I was one of the two contestants for best defensemen."

"That's great! I know you've worked hard."

"I have."

"What are you going to do while you guys are gone for playoffs?"

"She's going to have to sadly stay back. Unless we have a home game."

"I'll keep her distracted, so she won't think about you, I promise."

I could act as courageous as I wanted, but I deep down felt angry at myself for doing this.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah."

"Mav..."

"I honestly just hope that she'll change."

"If she truly loves you, she won't make the same mistake twice."

"Well, you better include me in your wedding."

"Of course, I will."

"Good."
