"True love is not a miracle, it is a blessing."
It had been two hours, and Rebecca was still unconscious. I didn’t want to even think about it, but she had to be fine. She just had to. Dad had gone to the pharmacy for medicines, Mom was busy instructing my aunt over the phone to pack essentials we might need, and I sat in the waiting area with Kevan and Ben, trying to hold myself together.
Then, finally, a nurse walked up to us.
“She’s conscious now. You can meet her.”
Thank God.
Kevan didn’t even let the nurse finish her sentence—he rushed straight into the ward. I muttered a quiet thank you to her.
Ben turned to me. “You’re not going in.”
I frowned. “I have to tell Mom and Dad first. They’ll be worried.”
Ben studied me carefully. “And what about you?”
“What do you mean?”
He sighed. “I know you’re not really angry about what happened that day. You’re angry because you think we’re hiding something from you.”
I looked at him sharply. “Shouldn’t I be?”
Ben’s voice softened. “All we ever wanted was to protect you. Because we all love you, Bella. Please try to understand. We regret what happened before. I swear I won’t let it happen again.”
His eyes… they told me he wasn’t lying.
“The best way to protect someone,” I whispered, “is to tell them what they’re being protected from.”
“Sometimes we can’t,” he said quietly. “Sometimes we want to, but we can’t.”
“Then remember this,” I said, my throat tight. “Untold truths hurt more than spoken lies.”
Ben’s expression broke. He looked away, and in that moment, I realized he was grieving too. “We miss her too, Mia. But you… you have to let her go. Move on.”
My chest tightened, tears stinging my eyes before I even realized I was crying. He gently wiped them away.
“It’s not easy to let go, Ben,” I whispered.
I turned quickly before he could see more, heading to the washroom. I needed air. I needed calm.
After messaging Mom about Rebecca waking up, I forced myself to walk toward the ward. She was my sister. No matter what, I had to see her. As I reached the door, I heard voices.
Rebecca’s voice.
“What are they doing here?” she whispered harshly.
My chest clenched.
Kevan replied, “I don’t know. They told me someone from your office called them.”
“But that’s not possible,” Rebecca argued.
“I know. Calm down. You’re not fully recovered yet.”
“They shouldn’t be here. Do something.”
Kevan sighed. “I tried, but your mom and sister are too stubborn.”
I stepped inside before they could continue. “You don’t have to worry. He doesn’t need to do anything. We’ll leave. Since it’s clear you don’t need us anymore.”
Rebecca’s eyes widened. “Bella, what are you saying?”
“Don’t.” My voice cracked, but I forced it steady. “I heard everything. You don’t need us—you have your new family now. That’s our problem, isn’t it? We can’t abandon family when they’re in trouble. We’re trying to work on our mistakes, but you—”
