Mr. Mikelson: “Am I late?”

Christian and I rose from our seats instantly.

Christian: “I should leave now. From here, Mr. Mikelson will take your interview. It was very nice to finally meet you.”

Mia: “Pleasure is all mine.”

We shook hands, and then Christian left. Suddenly, it was just me and him.

My heart skipped. Shit.

He moved behind me, his presence filling the space.

Mr. Mikelson: “I’m standing right behind you, Miss Roy.”

His voice—dark, smooth—made my chest tighten. I couldn’t speak, couldn’t breathe.

Mr. Mikelson: “What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue? In the lecture hall earlier you looked pissed. Anything happen?”

Mia: “No, sir.”

Mr. Mikelson: “Sir, hmm? Not Daniel?”

My eyes widened. Fuck. He heard me.

Mia: “Sorry, sir.”

Mr. Mikelson: “Sorry for what?”

Mia: “For saying your first name.”

Mr. Mikelson: “Wrong answer.”

Mia: “What’s the right one then?”

Mr. Mikelson: “You tell me.”

Mia: “I don’t know. Sorry.”

Mr. Mikelson: “You will.”

He sat down smoothly, power radiating even in silence.

Mr. Mikelson: “Please, take a seat.”

I obeyed. “Thank you, sir.”

He smirked. “Scared, Miss Roy?”

Mia: “No, sir.”

Mr. Mikelson: “You should be.”

My pulse hammered as our eyes locked. Why did looking at him make me feel like my entire body was unraveling?

Mr. Mikelson: “So. Where do we start?”

Mia: “Wherever you like.”

Mr. Mikelson: “Giving someone else the power to choose isn’t wise, Miss Roy.”

Mia: “If you don’t know how to start, then let the other choose.”

His lips curled slightly.

Mr. Mikelson: “Do you have a boyfriend?”

I froze. Did he really just—?

Mia: “That’s personal.”

Mr. Mikelson: “Nothing is personal between you and me, Miss Roy.”

Heat shot through me. I snapped back.

Mia: “Do you have a girlfriend?”

The moment the words slipped out, I knew I’d blown the interview. But losing with pride felt better than bowing.

Mr. Mikelson’s eyes gleamed. “Jealous?”

Mia: “Curious.”

Mr. Mikelson: “Curiosity kills the cat.”
