“My soul is half until I meet you.”
Rebecca: Can I come in?
Mia: Of course, help yourself.
Rebecca: Are you alright?
Mia: I wasn’t the one who fell off the stairs.
Rebecca: I’m fine.
Mia: Good.
Rebecca: You got a new flower preservation.
Mia: Yep.
Rebecca: It’s beautiful.
Mia: Hmm.
Rebecca: I’m trying, Bella.
Mia: And me too.
Rebecca: I was just shocked you guys were there. I didn’t think they’d tell you, and I never wanted to cause trouble.
Mia: Doesn’t matter. We’re family, and you know the rule.
Rebecca: Be there for each other—always, no matter how far we are.
Mia: Great-grandma’s rule. 🙂
Rebecca paused, her eyes softening.
Rebecca: I didn’t want to lie to you. That’s why I didn’t tell you everything.
Mia: …
Rebecca: I know you want to know what happened with them, but trust me—the more you know, the more it hurts. And Bella… you’re not ready for the truth.
Mia: Will I ever be?
Rebecca: One day. And when you are, I’ll be here.
Mia: I can’t move on, not without knowing what really happened.
Rebecca: He’s gone, Bella. She’s gone. The truth is that we’re alive, and we have to live. I know you pretend you’re okay, but inside, you still carry scars. You either have to heal them… or learn to live with them.
Mia: Easy to say. Hard to do.
Rebecca: You fought him, Bella. You’re a fighter. What happened wasn’t your fault.
Mia: He died in a car accident, didn’t he? (I mocked her.)
Rebecca: 😔
Mia: It’s okay. I know that’s the truth.
Rebecca: Please, Bella…
Mia: If you want me to know the truth… then you have to tell the truth.
Rebecca: I wish I could.
…
Rebecca: Goodnight, baby.
She kissed my forehead and headed for the door. But before she left, the truth I’d buried for years slipped out.
Mia: I didn’t fight him, sis.
Rebecca froze, her hand on the doorknob.
Mia: That night, I tried. But he was too strong, and I was too weak from the accident. I thought I was going to die… until someone came. He saved me. Protected me. He held me until I lost consciousness. I don’t know what happened to him after that. I never even saw his face.
Rebecca: Why didn’t you tell us before?
Mia: Why does it matter? Maybe it was a dream. Maybe it was just my broken mind playing tricks. (I mocked again.)
Rebecca: A stranger saved you?
Mia: Yes.
Rebecca came and sat beside me.
