I didn't reply, just grabbed my purse and headed for the door. The ride to the office was quick, and I was there in no time. As I walked through the halls, I couldn't help but feel a sense of dread in my stomach. I had never been fond of this place, even when I was a part of it. The sterile white walls and the uncomfortable furniture made me feel claustrophobic.

When I arrived at the meeting room, my parents were already there, along with my father's partner, Lucián. My father, the CEO of Nexus Financials, was a stern and intimidating man, but my mother, the COO, was even worse--Has always been worse. She had a way of making you feel like you were the dirt on the bottom of her shoe. They both wore their usual power suits, making them look even more formidable.

Cute.

"Ah, Calista," my father said, motioning for me to sit down. "We're glad you could make it." His tone was cold, but it was nothing compared to the icy glare my mother gave me as I took my seat. Lucián, on the other hand, looked somewhat amused. I couldn't help but wonder what they could possibly want from me.

"Now," my father began, leaning forward on the table. "As you know, Nexus Financials has been doing quite well recently. We've expanded our reach into new markets and diversified our portfolio." He paused for a moment, taking a sip of water. "However, we're always looking for ways to improve."

My mother took over from there. "That's where you come in, Calista. We want you to take on a more active role in the company. You have a unique perspective, and we believe you can bring a lot to the table."

"Isn't my role already active?" I asked. "As the records manager, I have a lot on my plate. It's more than just making sure no one takes more than they're looking for."

My father smiled. "We're aware of your current responsibilities, Calista. But with your new position, we feel you'll be able to bring a fresh perspective to the table. We're talking about expanding your role to include overseeing the entire information management system of the company."

My mother leaned forward as well. "In addition to that, we want you to spearhead a new initiative we're calling 'Project Elysium.' This project involves creating an innovative data management system that will not only streamline our operations but also provide us with valuable insights into our clients' needs."

I raised an eyebrow. "What kind of insights are we talking about?"

Lucián chuckled. "You'll have to see for yourself, Calista. But trust us, this is an opportunity you don't want to miss."

I took a deep breath. "I see. And what about my current responsibilities?"

My father shrugged. "Your current role will be absorbed by someone else. We believe--"

"Absolutely not!"

Everyone in the room looked at me, surprised by my outburst. My father's face grew hard, and my mother's eyes narrowed.

"Excuse me?" my father asked, his voice low and dangerous.

"I said, absolutely not," I repeated. "I'm not interested in anyone taking over my role. I'm happy with my current role and the limited interaction I have with the rest of the company."

Lucián chuckled again, but this time it sounded more sinister. "You know, Calista, you don't have to take on this new responsibility. You can just go back to your little corner of the world and keep your head down."

I stared at him, anger rising inside me. "You know what, Lucián? I think I will."

"And what exactly do you think you'll do?" my mother asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
