Damian
Five months later...
I can honestly say this has been the worst few months of my life. Countless, sleepless nights without Leila is driving me to an edge of a cliff. My night terrors have increasingly grown worse than before. I haven't seen Emilio and I've been ignoring the police and their questions, because I don't wanna relive that night. Or talk about that disgraceful bitch of a sister. Leila hasn't woken up or even moved an inch. It was different for me when I was in this position. I heard everything and could only move but so slightly. Two weeks felt like two years, so imagine how she's feeling right now.
I had scheduled nights where I could stay in the hospital with her and nights when I was forced to go home. Trust, I had my ways to sneak in here though. Her bruises have cleared up, thankfully. The doctors had finally removed her bandages from her head. She still looks so beautiful. Her ring still remains on her finger, too. Soon as she wakes up, I'm marrying her immediately. I can't wait another day.
Knock. Knock. "It's open."
"Cugino." Lorenzo entered and closed the door behind him.
"What you got for me today?"
"I wish I had something good, but... I'm just doing my routine check in and I gotta refill her IV." I nodded respectfully and allowed him to do so. To fill the silence in the room, Renzo clears his throat. "So, how are you holding up?"
"With my legs."
He chuckled. "You know what I mean, cugino."
"I mean I'm good, man. She's slowly healing, still breathing... that's all that matters to me."
"You look like you haven't slept in months."
"Can you blame me for real? My fiancé's in a coma." Oh fuck. Processing those words are a real bitch at this moment.
He silently nods in understanding. "Fiancé huh? That explains her ring."
I cut my eyes towards him. "What you thought it was a promise ring?"
He throws his hands up.
"Nah, cousin. That's the real deal." I glanced down at her ring and saw that there was still some dried up blood on it. I grabbed a wet wipe from the nearby cabinet and attempted to wipe the blood off her ring until there was a slight movement in her body. My eyes didn't just play a trick on me. Lorenzo noticed when he realized my reaction. He waits for Leila to move again and to my surprise, she does. "Mmmm."
"Oh Dio." I'm so in shock, I can't even move. It's like I'm watching a ghost rise from the dead.
"It's a miracle. Let her take her time to wake up. I'll be right back." Lorenzo announced before he disappeared.
I was left alone with her. I waited for Leila to move again. Five minutes later, she lightly tosses and turns but her eyes still aren't open. "Mmm mmm."
"I'm here, baby girl. You can wake up now." I hope the sounds of my voice eases her back to reality. She struggles to open them, but I can't move a muscle. She has to do it on her own. When she finally does just that, they settle onto me. I'm more than relieved to these eyes again. It's been far too fucking long.
Those big, brown eyes scanned all around the room and next thing I know, she's screaming in terror.
"Whoa, baby, baby. Calm down. It's okay." She's probably tryna adjust to her current conditions.Lorenzo comes rushing in when he hears her screams. "I was afraid she was gonna do that. She's most likely still traumatized from the accident. Ms. Campbell, please, just calm down. You're safe here."
"Who are you? What the fuck am I doing here?" She was completely frantic and scared.
"Who am- Ms. Campbell, I'm your doctor. Dr. Morretti? You were involved in a car accident a few months ago."
"What?! How long?! A car accident???" Leila starts to hyperventilate. Jesus Christ. I wasn't expecting this reaction at all.
"Move, I got this." Lorenzo steps out the way and I take Leila's hand. "Baby, take a deep breath. In for four." Leila breaths in. "Hold it. Now breathe out for four." She does exactly what I do and we repeat the technique until she's finally calm. "That's it. Feel better?"
"A little...." She rests her other hand on her head. "Mm. I- I just have one question."
"Anything, baby."
Leila looks to me. "Who are you?"
And just like that, those words were a shotgun to my chest. Now I wish I was dead.
