The boat ride was silent, until Kite brought them to a desserted island. Nahida didn't see the usual signs of civilization she had grown used to seeing in this world. Bright lights, tall buildings, and paths made for you, none of it seemed to exist here.
It was a simple forest, one that reminded her of home. The boat stopped once it hit land, Wanderer helped her out, placing her down while Kite walked ahead. The sand was warm on Nahida's feet. It also reminded her of the desert.
The wind suddenly picked up, her ears filled with the symphony of rustling leaves. With a deep breath, she continued after Wanderer. They saw Kite had stopped walking a couple feet away, and upon reaching his side, they saw a giant crab. The crab pinched its claws twice, seemingly in greeting.
Wanderer raised a brow at it, getting reminded of Fontaine and its red crabs. Those things always ran away from him when he was the Balladeer.
Kite turned to them while gentke leading the crab towards them.
"A good hunter is loved by animals. That's one of my requirements for knowing who should be a hunter."
At his words, the crab turned to them. It blinked at Wanderer and seemed to ignore him. Chossing to look at Nahida, it clapped its claws happily. Kite hummed at the reaction before looking at Wanderer.
"Interesting..."
When Nahida smiled at the crab, it smiled back with closed eyes. She grabbed Wanderers arm and pulled him towards it. At seeing the creatures hesitance, Nahida pulled Wanderer down and stretched his lips upwards with her fingers. The smile failed miserably at making him more friendly. And yet, the crab blinked before clapping once, and hiding behind Kite.
Kite hummed, finding the crabs reaction to be quite interesting. Even though it seemed wary of Wanderer at first, it wasn't scared of him. It immediately loved Nahida and cheered happily at getting her attention.
Kite didn't think Nahida would have any hunter potential due to her weak state- And yet, it seems Nen could be the deciding factor for her hunter future. He nodded at the findings, and turned towards the forest.
"Alright, follow me."
Wanderer looked at the crab, seeing it close its eyes in a smile. He placed an arm behind Nahida and made her move forward first. The crab followed after them even when Wanderer had passed it.
Nahida found herself calm, and bubbly inside this forest. Her eyes looked everywhere inside the forest. Hearing the leaves move with the wind, feel the grass beneath her feet, and smell the forest. Everything was similar to home, yet different.
A leaf danced down to her. She reached to it, eyes shining as it landed on her palm. She remembered that leaf she had inspected before, and compared them. Unlike the leaf from the hunter exam, this one was greener. Healthier, and oddly familiar.
She heard Wanderer speak beside her.
"What is it?"
Nahida shaked her head, and gently held the leaf in her hands.
"I feel like, this forest is familiar."
It reminded her of her power, of the dendro element. Of the Aranara... How odd.
Kite suddenly stopped, Wanderer placed a hand on Nahida's head so she would stand in place. He turned to them, crossing his arms and looking at them with narrowed eyes.
"I think it's time for your first lesson. Do any of you know what nen is?"
Nahida spoke for both of them.
"It's like the soul, yes?"
She kept it vague so Kite would explain more. He nodded and started walking again. They hurried to follow after, grass crunching under Nahida's movements, but Wanderer and Kite didn't make a sound as they walked.
