Kai and Nya sat in silence while the rest of the Slytherins at the table chatted happily with each other. Kai turned to the blond boy who shook his hand previously and elbowed him gently. The boy - Draco wasn't it? - turned to look at him with sparkling grey eyes.
"Yes?" he said, with a voice as smooth as silk.
"You said your name was Draco, yeah?" asked Kai while absentmindedly fixing his hair.
"I did," he confirmed. The candlelight shifted, perfectly outlining his pale, pointed face. "And you're Kai. That's a strange name."
"Says you," retorted Kai with a smirk. The platinum blonde's frown twitched a bit. "This is Nya, my little sister." Nya leaned forward a bit to smile and wave at him, but as soon as Kai turned away from her, her friendly smile turned to a scowl as she gave Draco a look that clearly said, Screw this up and I will brutally murder you. Then she smiled sweetly again as if nothing happened.
"Who is this Dray?" said a voice from next to Draco. A girl was standing over his shoulder and looking over at Kai and his sister. She was a bit short and had wavy dark brown hair that shined under the dim light. Her high cheekbones made her eyes look sunken into her face. "Are these the new Slytherin meat?" She had a slight French accent and spoke in a way that demanded respect.
"They're not pieces of meat Pans," said Draco sharply. "Sorry about her. Pansy can be a bit... rude." Pansy scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest. It was then that she first seemed to notice Nya.
"Who are you?" she asked sharply. Nya got up off the bench and moved so that she stood in front of Pansy, as if showcasing her height. She was at least a head taller than Pansy.
"I'm Nya," she said confidently, holding out her hand for Pansy to shake. "And this is my brother Kai. It's a pleasure to meet you." The shorter girl's eyes widened slightly before she took Nya's outstretched hand. Kai watched as his sister gave her a rather firm handshake. He smiled. He loved his sister.
"So you're the new Slytherins," said a soft voice from behind him. Kai whipped his head around to see a tall, dark-skinned boy with piercing brown eyes. His dark hair was worn in one very long braid down his back. "I feel sorry for you." His voice was tantalizing, almost manipulative.
"Great Merlin, Blaise! We're not that bad!" said Draco. Blaise smiled.
"It's good to meet you," he said gently, flashing Kai a sweet smile. Kai felt strange for a moment, like he was going to throw up- but in a good way somehow? The feeling quickly passed and Kai thought nothing of it.
"Well," said Pansy abruptly. "We should probably show you two the common room." She began to walk briskly out of the hall, and the other four Slytherins followed her. They walked down a long, dimly lit staircase until they came to a large silver door, decorated with snakes. "Mudblood," said Pansy without hesitation.
"Is that really the password?" asked Nya in shock.
"Yep," said Pansy coolly.
"それはとても偏屈です." said Nya.
"同意しました." said Kai.
They were already at the lowest level of the castle so Kai was already pretty uncomfortable, but when he entered the dark stone common room the feeling only worsened. The ceiling was made entirely of glass panes, and above that was lots and lots of water. They were under the lake. Nya noticed her brother's terrified expression and gave his hand a gentle squeeze and smiled at him.
"何かが起こったら、私と私の水の力があなたを捕まえます." said Nya.
"ありがとうお姉さん。私が水が好きではないことは知っています." said Kai greatfully. There were dozons of people bundled up in warm green blankets and doing each other's makeup and the whole room smelled of evergreens and earth. Both of them gasped as they saw four dark shapes swim over them.
"Those would be the merfolk," said Blaise. Nya quickly and gracefully climbed up one of the tall support poles like it was nothing and calmly sat in an archway. Draco's jaw dropped at the apparent ease in which she ascended the structure.
"I- what- how- did she just- what?" stammered Pansy in obvious shock at both Nya's immense skill and the knowing smirk on Kai's face.
"Don't worry about her," he said smoothly. "This is normal." Nya gestured for Kai to join her, so Kai ran forward and casually vaulted off the back of one of the couches and grabbed onto the arch where his sister was sitting. As he sat down next to her, he could feel the stares of their housemates boring into his skin. He was used to it though.
"How did you do that?" called a student from below them.
"Practice," Kai called back. "Lots and lots of practice." The student only continued to stare in awe at the siblings. Suddenly one of the merfolk swam right up to Nya and began talking to her. Well, it wasn't English, but Kai assumed it was trying to communicate. Then to the surprise of everyone, including Kai, Nya began "talking" back. To him it just sounded like gibberish, but Nya seemed to understand perfectly well. Kai looked around to see how the other Slytherins were reacting, but they seemed just as confused. Nya paused for a moment and turned to her brother. When she saw his expression, she gave him a questioning look.
"What?" she asked, just loud enough for the others to hear.
"What do you mean "what"?" asked Draco. "You were speaking Mermish."
"You mean I wasn't speaking English?" she said, clearly confused.
"No!" exclaimed a tall blonde girl.
"It sounded just like English to me," she said, hopping down to the ground. Kai followed her and landed just as gracefully. After a few seconds of silence, the Smith siblings were swarmed by questioning Slytherins.
What a way to make a first impression.
