Nate's POV
Riley made a perfect first impression today at school. I'm very proud of her. She deserves to make her life better at this school. After everything she's been through, Omaha is a chance for her to turn her life around. And it all starts here at Westside High.
I made sure mom picked her up after school. The Jacks and Sam wanted me to stay back after school to play some basketball at the courts. Which, how can you decline? If mom had worked today I would have gone home so Riley wouldn't be alone. But mom didn't work, so she was able to pick up Riley.
God it's been great having her here. Just wish it was a bit easier. Hiding her isn't the best thing in the world. Faking us not knowing each other sucks majorly to be completely honest.
"Hey so what do you guys think of that new Riley chick?" Johnson suddenly asked. Gaining my attention.
"She's kind of freaky if you ask me." Gilinsky shrugged and threw the ball up towards the hoop.
Don't say anything Nate. Keep her a secret.
"Hey she's not that bad. I actually really like her. She's cool." Sam smiled.
Don't be crushing on her Sam. Oh I'd punch him square in the jaw if he was. Ugh I wish I could just tell them everything about Riley right now.
"Come on you don't find her just a little freaky? I mean no new girl ever tries to make a first impression like that. Acting smart and athletic? Being a show off? It's like she's not human." Johnson laughed.
I couldn't help but speak up. "What if all of that wasn't an act? What if that's who she really is?"
"Well then damn that girl really isn't human." Gilinsky chuckled.
"Exactly, have you ever seen a girl like her make that kind of impression on their first day?" Johnson questioned.
"Just because that was her first impression doesn't mean she's not human. Maybe she's just a really cool girl and not afraid to show it. Not everyone is shy on their first day." Sam added.
"It's only her first day and Jillian's already out to take her down. I feel bad for Riley." Gilinsky said. Those words made me freeze in my tracks.
Damn, Jillian. If she does anything to Riley, I'll forget about trying to hide us not knowing each other. I'll manage to keep her safe another way. But Jillian, I swear to god I'll break her if she does anything to Riley.
Doesn't matter if she is a girl. No one messes with my best friend. Too many people have hurt her. And I'm not about to let anyone else do that. Especially when Riley is living in my house under my watch.
"To bad this Riley wasn't your Riley from online huh there Nate." Sam laughed and threw the ball at me.
I caught the ball and laughed awkwardly. Please don't be smart enough to catch on.
"Kind of ironic isn't it?" Gilinsky said.
"How is that ironic?" I asked raising an eyebrow at him.
"You've been talking to a girl named Riley. Now this new girl, happening to have the same name, just shows up after you two stopped talking." Johnson chimed in.
"Where was that Riley you were talking to from?" Sam asked.
Oh god. I don't know what Riley's told anyone yet. I know she was having some sort of conversation with Sam earlier and mentioned to some people where she was from after they asked her. Just pick a random state. I have a pretty big chance of guessing a different state than what she possibly could have said.
