Evelyn's POV
Eve, we will have to go and register you for your new class tomorrow. Be on time, and please get ready without throwing any tantrums," Ed informed with a tone of authority.
"Yea yea, I will..." I replied, showing no interest whatsoever.
To be honest, I had no desire to attend the new class. But it wasn't a matter of choice. My brother made it clear – go, or face the consequences. Having spent six years at this school, the prospect of a new session was daunting, and this time, physics classes taught by my third oldest brother, Daniel. Ahhh! The anticipation was nothing short of boring, a sentiment I was sure nobody cared about.
"Evelyn!" Liam's shout snapped me out of my thoughts.
"What are you up to?" he asked, looking confused.
"Umm, nothing. Sorry, I spaced out," I mumbled, attempting to shake off my disinterest.
"Have some food and go to bed. You have to wake up early tomorrow," Ed ordered, placing a bowl full of vegetables and, of course, a glass of milk in front of me.
I hated milk. And the vegetables too. Yet, all five of my brothers were gathered around. A rule in the house dictated that everyone had to sit and eat together, regardless of how busy we were.
"I'm done," I declared, stuffing a spoonful of veggies into my mouth.
"You ate nothing, Eve," Sam said, looking disappointed.
"No, please, I am not hungry."
"I will not entertain this. Finish your plate and drink the milk," Liam ordered, pointing towards my plate.
"Exactly, it's not healthy to sleep on an empty stomach, Evelyn. I am tired of telling you the same thing every damn day," Sam sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"It's my stomach. And I feel it's full," I stated, placing the spoon on my plate and standing up from my chair.
As I looked up, catching Ed's stern gaze, regret washed over me like a tide, and I hesitated before retaking my seat.
"You are not leaving this table until your plate looks clean. Got it?" Ed stated with a low tone that sent shivers down my spine. Picking up my spoon, I begrudgingly resumed my attempt to conquer the remaining vegetables.
"I asked you something," he continued, his tone demanding an answer.
Opting for silence, I realized courage was dwindling, frustration building. Ed, unyielding, decided to take a different approach.
"Dan, my belt is in my wardrobe. Please put that in Eve's room after your dinner. I am looking forward to finding out the bad influences on her," he calmly instructed, raising the stakes.
"I got it, okay? I am eating, na," I muttered, recognizing that a simple apology might have sufficed.
Evan gently nudged my elbow, a silent prompt to reconsider my stance.
"Sorry. I was just not thinking straight. I have had a bad headache since the evening," I admitted, my emotions teetering on the edge of tears.
"Finish the plate, Eve," Liam interjected, steering the conversation back to the matter at hand.
"Sam, do take her to your hospital tomorrow and run the necessary tests. It's better to complete all these pending stuff before she gets busy with her school," Ed informed, introducing a new layer of concern.
Panicking at the thought of needles, I resisted, "It's just a headache, okay! The fever also goes away with medications."
"I didn't ask about your opinion, Eve. you know we care about you, right? The tests are just to make sure you're okay. And please try focusing on your dinner and fix this attitude of yours before I need to fix it," Ed clarified, his patience waning.
"Ed, I am sorry. I don't want to irritate you. But please, Ed, you know how much I hate needles. Please, Ed, please," I pleaded, desperation tainting my voice.
Liam, always practical, chimed in, "Eve, sometimes we need to face things we don't like for our own well-being. It's just a quick checkup, and Sam will be there with you."
"But I hate..."
Sam interjected softly, "Eve, I promise it'll be quick. And remember, I'll be right there holding your hand."
"You can't convince me, Sam. I am not going with you."
"Quiet!" Ed's shout echoed, bringing a temporary hush to the tense dinner scene.
"We're doing this for your health, Eve. Finish your dinner, and we'll handle the rest. No more arguments."
"And one more thing, Sam doesn't need to convince you. This matter isn't open for discussion. And you ARE going with him," Ed declared firmly.
"Ed, it's just I don't want..."
"To your room. Go. Now."
"But Ed..."
"Shut up, Eve. The influence of Victoria over you isn't very convincing to me. Where is this courage coming from, young lady? Or are we just being too lenient with you?" Ed's voice resonated with frustration, his veins popping out in visible irritation. I could sense the storm I had triggered.
"Go upstairs, Eve. I will deal with it my way," Ed ordered, his anger palpable.
"You're too mad to deal with. Let me take care of it," Sam intervened, attempting to diffuse the escalating tension.
As much as I didn't want to see Sam in front of me, the fear of facing Ed pushed me to agree. "No, she's pushing my buttons hard," Ed retorted, glaring at me as if looks alone could inflict punishment.
"Can you pass the black salt?" Evan mumbled, pointing towards Liam in an attempt to shift attention from me.
Liam pushed the salt to him, and Evan nudged my elbow lightly, a silent signal to keep a low profile.
"Okay, I am so done with my life. I just don't want anything. No food, no school. Just let me be..." I muttered, resigning to the impending storm.
Ed walked towards me, his grip firm on my biceps. In a swift motion, he tossed me over his knee, delivering five resounding smacks at my sit spot.
"Finish the milk. I'll see you in your room within 10 minutes. Am I clear?"
"Yes," I mumbled, feeling the heat rise to my cheeks.
Another smack on my back prompted a more resolute response, "Yes, sir!"
"Good," Ed concluded, his tone a mixture of stern authority and a hint of concern.
As I retreated to my room, the echoes of their conversations lingered in the air. The door closed behind me, leaving me alone with my thoughts and a mix of emotions that brewed within the confines of a tumultuous family dynamic.
