Chapter 11 - The Discovery
Days had passed by until my mind could set back for me to realise what had previously happened. These chaotic days had left me in nothing but confusion.
It was too hard to believe Aunt Beatrice was gone and is unable to return, she was there for Mother and I, in the most toughest time. She was also present at my Father's funeral, she'd told my Mother that "everyone has to go sometime, so let it go". I guess it was her time to go too and we had to let her go.
Although her death had left Mother and I a lot more emaciated, it had also strengthened my destiny to murder the Chief, as he was the one to kill her. The longer I took to take action against him, the quicker he will proceed in destroying mine. I could picture him sitting on his throne, with his malevolent smile, thinking of ways to weaken me.
To show everyone that he and his people are much too powerful for us.
But of course, it is not true. All these years, my people have obeyed, worked in such horrid conditions silently. All of which everything belonged to them; food, shelter and clothing. I say it's time someone stood up for what they believed in and say 'enough is enough!'. Regardless of what would be thrown at us, we have to fight back. We have to ensure that we claim back equality for everyone.
"Abigail..." Mother whispered as she had creaked my bedroom door open. Her eyes were hardly open and her face was wet, she had still been crying all night because Aunt's loss.
"We have to go to Aunt Beatrice's, some lads are wanting to purchase her house. Since we can't stay there, I thought that we can clear her house out and take some of her stuff. At least that would prompt us of her whenever we see it."
I decided to bring along the briefcase that contained all of my Father's blades, that had been gifted to me from Aunt. It was the only thing that I would remember her from.
Once I had walked in, strangely enough, everything was in the same place and condition since the day I had received my blades.
"Abigail, let's go in the attic to find something useful, there might be something valuable. We would be better of keeping it rather than someone else. After all, we are her family" Mother smiled for the first time after the incident.
"Yeah sure, I'll just leave my briefcase here since it's quite heavy and I'll make my way up" I replied whilst placing it in the place Aunt Beatrice had given it to me, on the paisley patterned chair.
------------
The attic was much larger than the rooms downstairs, but was dimly lit by a light bulb that was trapped in cobwebs, giving it a haunted impression. Nobody has been in here for a long time.
I glanced around the attic, seeing a range of objects from an over-used ironing board to a large antique clock. Looking at the darkest corner of the attic, there was a strange looking object that lay on one of the shoe stands. Fingers ripping through the cobwebs that insulated the teddy bear, I noticed that this was a property of Cassie's, Aunt Beatrice's daughter. Although, she wasn't my real family, I felt a sudden urge of pain that rested on my heart as I held the bear closer to me.
A sudden bang from downstairs had risen until we could hear it bang against our ear drums,
"Mum, why didn't you lock the door?" I started to worry, replacing back the memorable teddy back on the shoe stand.
"No, but it's probably one of the lads that wanted to purchase this house. Go and check" she demanded whilst brushing the dust of some hats.
Running down the stairs with extreme alacrity, nothing really bothered but my briefcase. It meant a lot to me, it was the first and last gift from Aunt Beatrice. My legs could not run any faster than the thoughts my mind pictured for me.
I looked to see that my briefcase was no longer in the place I last saw it as.
Neither was the bottom half of the house.
