*********Jeffrey's POV**********
My mind was still reeling from seeing Grace on friday night. I hadn't realised how much I'd missed her until I felt her hand in mine. I had it really bad for this girl.
I'd barely slept racking my brain for a way to gain leverage on Lucy and get her off our back. I was yet to come up with a master plan.
I'd barely made it through the main entrance before Lucy approached me. Her eyes held a devious glint that made my blood run cold.
"Hello Lucy" I greeted her with a polite smile,
"Jeffrey, can we talk for a moment?" Lucy's tone was calm as she led me to her office. We entered the small room, and she gestured toward a laptop displaying a video feed.
The footage showed Grace and me leaving the photography exhibition only minutes apart, the timestamp confirming the closeness of our departures.
Lucy, arms folded, let the silence stretch. "Care to explain, Jeffrey?" Her voice held a mix of accusation and satisfaction.
To anyone who didn't know about Grace and me, this footage was hardly damning. It wasn't like it showed us holding hands or getting off with each other.
"What exactly am I looking at?" I asked Lucy, playing dumb.
"Don't insult me Jeffrey I know Grace has told you about our arrangement" Lucy snapped,
"What arrangement is that?" I asked, not giving her anything
"I keep your secret as long as she stays away from you" she hissed "you know we're a better fit"
"What exactly are you accusing me of Lucy?" I groaned exasperated
"Don't play dumb Jeffrey you and Grace have clearly been involved in an illicit relationship" she snapped
I laughed, making her frown.
"Why are you laughing?" she asked, frowning, clearly confused as to why I wasn't begging her to keep my secret.
"Sorry" I chuckled, composing myself "You think I'm in a relationship with my student?"
"You can deny it all you want" she scoffed "Grace confirmed it"
"Did she?" I asked, I could see the doubt in her eyes as she thought back to her conversations with Grace. "Is that what this CCTV is supposed to prove" I asked her "Because it doesn't look like anything to me", she was floundering, her mouth opening and closing but no words coming out.
Threatening Grace was one thing, a young girl who worried too much anyway, assuming she had to comply with her terms to protect me. But now she was trying the same with me and I could see straight through her. She had no proof. Me and Grace may have been reckless at times, but never reckless enough to be caught.
Grace had been right to panic and back off, we would have to be more careful but Lucy had no proof and we just had to keep it that way.
"I don't know what arrangement you think you have with Grace" I told her "But as her tutor I suggest any issues you have with her go through me or I will have you reported for targeting a student unnecessarily."
"You won't get away with this" she hissed,
"Get away with what Lucy?" I laughed "You've not given me any evidence of me having done anything wrong"
"Yet" she snapped "I'll catch you out"
"So I guess you don't want to grab a coffee?" I asked, her face changed to one of shock, she obviously didn't expect me to continue the way things had been, but I knew it was best to keep her sweet in that respect, just in case she did find evidence.
"I'll catch you later" she muttered, clearly unsure of how to respond and completely thrown by the way I'd reacted.
Back in my room I paced nervously, thinking about Lucy's weak attempt to use a video against us. I didn't want her to have any power over us, especially when the video didn't really prove anything. I needed to talk to Grace, share what happened, and make sure we stayed strong against Lucy.
I decided the best way to arrange a chat with Grace was through Neve. I checked her schedule and waited outside her first lesson once it was over. I approached Neve, keeping my voice low to ensure our conversation remained private.
"Neve, I need your help," I said, glancing around to confirm our privacy. "Lucy has some footage, and I need to talk to Grace without leaving any proof. Can you pass on a message to her?"
Neve, quick to understand the gravity of the situation, nodded. "Of course, Jeffrey. What should I tell her?"
"Tell her to come to my room when she has a free session later" I told her
Neve raised a concerned eyebrow, worry etched on her face. "Is that wise? Won't it look suspicious if you're caught?"
"As long as it appears like a routine conversation between a tutor and a student, we'll be fine," I reassured her.
As Grace arrived at my room during her free period, a palpable tension hung in the air. Her glances over her shoulder betrayed her nerves. She entered cautiously, and the door closed softly behind her.
"Jeffrey, are you sure about this?" she asked, her eyes searching for reassurance.
"As long as you stop looking so damn guilty," I chuckled, trying to lighten the atmosphere. Yet, beneath the humour, the seriousness of our predicament lingered, and the room held an unspoken acknowledgment of the challenges we faced.
Grace hesitated, her eyes reflecting a mix of anxiety and trust. After a brief pause, she spoke softly, "I just... I don't want any trouble for you, Jeffrey. I never meant for things to get so complicated."
I nodded, understanding the weight of her words. "Grace, we knew this wouldn't be easy. But we'll figure it out together. Lucy's playing games, and we can't let her win. We just need to be smart about it."
She sighed, a mixture of relief and apprehension evident in her features. "What's our plan then? How do we handle Lucy without making things worse?"
I leaned in, lowering my voice even further, as if the walls themselves had ears.
"Neve's helping us keep communication discreet. We'll use coded messages, like the one she passed on to you. That way, Lucy won't have any solid proof, and we can keep our meetings under the radar."
Grace nodded, her expression shifting to a determined resolve. "So, we continue being careful, keep our conversations innocent, and stay one step ahead of Lucy?"
"Exactly," I affirmed. "And we'll find a way to turn the tables on her. We won't let her control the narrative."
As we discussed our plan, the room became a haven for shared secrets, a place where trust and determination mingled in the air. Grace's worry began to subside, replaced by a growing confidence that together, we could navigate the complexities of our hidden connection and outsmart Lucy's scheming.
