*********Grace's POV*********
The following days were a delicate dance between routine and secrecy. Jeffrey and I continued our discreet meetings, relying on Neve's help to keep our communication hidden from Lucy's watchful eyes. As the silent whispers of coded messages unfolded, we felt a fragile sense of security.
Lucy had walked in a couple of times and the rage within her eyes was evident. But we were sat at opposite ends of the room remaining professional and she couldn't do anything about it.
I hated the fact Jeffrey still tolerated her and met her for coffee. But I also understood the need to keep her sweet.
But the routine of secret rendezvous within the college walls had started to lose its charm for me. I yearned for something more, something private and intimate that went beyond the hushed conversations in hidden corners. The desire to be alone with Jeffrey, away from the prying eyes of Lucy and the constraints of public spaces, had grown stronger with each stolen moment.
Thursday afternoon I met Jeffrey once again in his room for my study session. Our eyes met, and the unspoken desires lingered in the air.
"Jeffrey, I need to be alone with you," I admitted, my voice carrying a soft plea.
"Grace I know" he sighed "As much as I enjoy your company, keeping things innocent is driving me insane"
"Where can we meet?" I asked, desperation in my tone "is it safe at your house?"
"I'm not sure" Jeffrey sighed "She knows where I live but I don't think she knows about the back gate to the alleyway"
"Easy enough to figure out if she comes snooping though" I groaned
"We need a safe house" Jeffrey joked, but it wasn't funny because he was right.
"I just want to be able to touch you Jeffrey" I whispered, voice breaking slightly as the emotion of the past few weeks hit me.
"Don't get upset Gracie" he soothed, I could tell it killed him not being able to comfort me properly "We'll think of something"
"Do you ever think we shouldn't be doing this?" I asked "it feels like with everything against us the universe is trying to tell us something"
"Don't talk like that" he scolded, I knew my comment had hurt him, "I'll find a way Grace, don't give up on us"
**********Jeffrey's POV*********
After Grace had left I felt deflated. I was hurt by her comment about the universe trying to tell us something and needed to clear my head.
I went for a walk around campus, I was just taking a minute to myself to breath in the fresh air and clear my mind when the click of heels caught my attention. I sighed inwardly as I prepared for the inevitable.
"Jeffrey." Lucy appeared beside me, wearing a calculated smirk that hinted at mischief. "You look like you could use a coffee? My treat."
Caught off guard, I hesitated. Lucy's proposition seemed innocent enough, but a nagging feeling told me there was more beneath the surface. But the promise of caffeine was too appealing so against my better judgement, I agreed and followed her to the campus Starbucks.
As we stood in the queue she leaned in a bit too close, her words a soft whisper that sent shivers down my spine for all the wrong reasons.
"You know, Jeffrey, I've been thinking. I can offer you something Grace can't. No secrets, no hiding. Just pure pleasure."
My eyes widened, the shock and discomfort evident on my face. Lucy's proposition was blatant, a bold attempt to exploit what she perceived as my frustration.
Maintaining my composure, I declined with a forced smile. "Lucy, I appreciate the offer, but I'm not interested and as I've already told you, Grace is simply my student"
Undeterred, Lucy chuckled softly. "Think about it, Jeffrey. A secret affair can be exhilarating. You should know."
"Lucy, I want to be clear that I value our professional relationship as colleagues. Entering into any form of romantic or intimate involvement is not something I'm comfortable with. I hope you understand and can respect those boundaries." I told her.
Lucy just smirked as she ordered our coffee.
"If I remember rightly..." Lucy whispered as the server made our drinks, "You very much enjoyed blurring the lines of those boundaries when you bent me over your dining room table"
My eyebrows furrowed at Lucy's provocative comment. I took a deep breath, maintaining my composure despite her attempt to rattle me.
"Lucy you know how I feel about our past interactions, and that is where they need to stay, in the past" I told her
"Oh, Jeffrey, don't be such a stick in the mud. The past can be so... inspiring. Think of all the other kitchen furniture we could take advantage of" she teased provocatively, holding out my coffee.
"Thanks for the coffee Lucy" I told her "But that is all I'm accepting from you"
"For now" she smirked, winking as she strutted away.
After Lucy walked away, I shook my head slightly, exhaling a breath I didn't realize I was holding. A subtle hint of frustration or exasperation, but I quickly composed myself.
I glanced at the coffee in my hand, silently reaffirming my commitment to maintaining boundaries and avoiding any further entanglements with Lucy. But damn she was persistent.
I was glad when the day was over. In the comfort of my own home I was able to digest the events of the day and consider the best solution for the problems that seemed to be mounting up.
Sat in bed on my laptop I found myself browsing through listings for dining room tables. A deliberate purchase that demonstrated a commitment to leave behind the echoes of the past, creating a space for honesty. A purchase that held hope that one day soon I could sit at that table with the girl of my dreams without worrying about any external influences.
Whilst browsing for kitchen furniture, another advert caught my eye that could also solve the issue of not having anywhere private and safe to meet Grace. I dialled the number on the advert and hoped it wasn't too late in the day to negotiate.
