Chapter 37

Monday rolled around, and Neve cornered me during lunch, looking like she had something serious to say. We found a quiet spot in the cafeteria, and Neve hesitated before breaking the news.

"Grace," Neve started slowly, "I heard some really bad rumours about you and Jeffrey. Thought you should know."

My eyes widened in surprise as Neve delivered the unexpected news. The chatter in the bustling cafeteria faded into the background as my focus narrowed on her words.

"Rumors?" I repeated, trying to process the information. "About Jeffrey and me?"

Neve nodded solemnly, "Yeah, it seems like some people are spreading stories, suggesting things about your relationship with Jeffrey."

My stomach churned with a mix of confusion and concern. Jeffrey and I had been discreet, yet here we were, thrust into the spotlight of gossip.

"We need to talk to Jeffrey," Neve suggested, her brows furrowed in shared worry.

As we made our way to Jeffrey's office, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease.

Neve and I entered Jeffrey's office, finding him at his desk. I noticed the shift in his expression, his usual warm smile replaced by a furrowed brow.

"Hey, what's happening?" he asked, sounding concerned.

I took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "Jeffrey, Neve overheard some rumours about us spreading. About our relationship"

Jeffrey's eyes widened in surprise. "How?" he asked "We've been discrete"

"I know" I sighed "but someone's been talking about us"

"It doesn't take a genius to figure out who" Neve scoffed,

"She wouldn't" Jeffrey groaned

"She must have" Neve told him

"I thought you'd gotten Lucy under control" I asked him

"I thought I had" he exclaimed "she's gone too far this time"

"What will you do?" I asked

"I don't know Grace" he sighed "But we need to me more careful than ever now that it wont just be Lucy watching us"

"Great" I sighed, deflated. After such a lovely weekend together we were being brought back to the reality of our situation.

"I'll help in any way I can but someone needs to speak to Lucy" Neve observed "and she still doesn't know that I know"

"I'll deal with Lucy" Jeffrey confirmed

"Let us know how it goes?" I asked

"I'll meet you both at the flat after college" he told us, I nodded and attempted a reassuring smile as we left his room.

***********Jeffrey's POV************

I stormed into Lucy's office, ready to unleash all my frustration. Lucy, sitting there like she owned the place, looked up with that fake innocence she loved to put on.

"What the heck, Lucy?" I snapped, my voice all edged with annoyance.

"Jeffrey, darling, what's got you all riled up?" Lucy responded, pretending she had no clue.

"Don't play dumb with me. I heard about the rumours you're spreading about me and Grace," I said, trying to keep my cool.

Lucy leaned back, crossing her legs like she was on some reality TV show. "Rumours? Come on, Jeffrey, people talk. It's not my fault they find your little thing with innocent Grace so interesting."

I gritted my teeth, trying not to lose it. "This has to stop, Lucy. You're messing with not just my rep but Grace's too."

Lucy laughed, that cold, calculated laugh. "Oh, Jeffrey, always the serious one. I thought you enjoyed a bit of drama."

"This isn't a game," I shot back. "I won't let you mess up Grace's life just for fun."

Lucy leaned in, her eyes locked onto mine. "You know, Jeffrey, there's an easy way to shut all this down. Just start something with me. Show the world you'd never be interested in your innocent student."

My eyes narrowed. "I'd never do that, Lucy. I won't sacrifice who I am for your stupid games."

Lucy just chuckled, like she had some secret plan. "We'll see, Jeffrey. We'll see."

As I left her office, the tension hung in the air, and the fight to protect my relationship with Grace got even more intense. Man, dealing with Lucy was like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded.

After the tense confrontation with Lucy, I needed a moment to collect my thoughts. I decided to step outside for some fresh air, hoping the cool breeze would clear my mind. As I strolled through the campus, I replayed the conversation with Lucy in his head.

Pacing the corridors I couldn't shake off the repulsion from Lucy's proposition. It felt like she had crossed every imaginable boundary, exploiting the vulnerabilities in my personal life.

I felt completely helpless.

There must be another way to quieten the rumours.

How could I tell Grace about Lucy's scheme.

The mere thought of it filled me with dread. But keeping her in the dark wasn't an option. I had to find a way to navigate this mess without causing more damage. The high school drama that Lucy had injected into our lives was a far cry from the college life I had anticipated. As a tutor, I never thought I'd be caught up in such a twisted narrative.

I met Grace and Neve at the flat, the air heavy with anticipation. Their eyes locked onto mine, silently urging me to share the outcome of the confrontation with Lucy.

"Lucy didn't back down," I began, frustration evident in my tone. "In fact, she suggested the only way to stop the rumours is if I start a relationship with her."

Grace's eyes widened in disbelief, and Neve's jaw tightened. The weight of the situation hung in the room like a stormy cloud.

"What did you say?" Grace asked nervously,

"No obviously" I scoffed "Did you really think I'd entertain it?"

"No" she replied relieved.

"So what are you going to do?" Neve asked

"I don't know" I sighed, sinking into the sofa with my head in my hands "What else can I do?"

Grace's eyes widened, a mix of shock and concern crossing her face. "Jeffrey, you can't be seriously considering it as a solution," she said, her voice carrying a tone of disbelief.

Neve also looked sceptical but seemed to consider the situation. "It's a risky move, but it might be the only way to stop Lucy's rumours from spreading further."

"Letting Lucy think you're in a relationship" Grace exclaimed, disgusted and hurt "How can either of you accept that as a solution, the idea of the two of your together makes my skin crawl, we all know she will expect certain things out of the relationship. I won't stick around whilst you fool around with Lucy"

I sighed, realising the gravity of the situation. Faking a relationship with Lucy seemed like an absurd solution, but the urgency of protecting our reputations left little room for other options.

"I hate the idea as much as you do, but if it's the only way to put an end to this, then maybe we should consider it." I sighed

The room fell into a heavy silence as we grappled with the harsh reality of the plan ahead. The thought of pretending to be romantically involved with Lucy, even for appearances, left a bitter taste in my mouth. Yet, the fear of irreversible damage to our relationships pushed us to contemplate desperate measures.
