Proverbs 4:23

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Guarding our hearts doesn't mean to be cold and uncaring towards people. It means to be careful with what we're allowing into our hearts. Jesus loves and cares for people. We should follow His example.
